Nuts

Just curious as to how many of you have fed your LO's nuts yet. Last weekend we got some healthy energy bar things that are basically all crushed nuts, oats and dried fruit. My H was eating them so of course Ava wanted them too. We let her have little pieces and she snacked on them all day while we were out. 2 days later we were at her 1 year appointment and our Pedi told us no nuts until she is 3!!! So after the dr left the room, my H says "well I guess we shouldn't have given her those oat bars, no more of those."

Considering she didn't have a reaction I think she is probably fine. However my H is by-the-book about a lot of things. Yesterday I gave Ava a knitted blanket in her crib for nap time for the first time (she still sleeps in sleepsacks). Last night when we were putting her to bed, my H saw the blanket and says "what's this blanket doing in here??" so I played dumb and was like "oh! uh...I...." then he grabs it and says "no blankets in the crib!" geez!

Re: Nuts

  • I will not be doing nuts until at least 3. However let me explain that we do peanut butter and nutella. I won't do actual nuts because my 4 year old, then almost 2, aspirated on an almond I gave him. He didn't chew it fully and began laughing. He ended up in the operating room, under anesthesia, to have all the tiny pieces removed from his lungs.

Yikes, that is incredibly scary!! Ok, hearing that story alone makes me want to wait until she's 3!
  • We have given peanut butter since about 10 months with no issues but I don't think I will give hard nuts for a while because of choking.

Veronica had nuts in granola bars that I had made. It's a choking hazard more than am allergy concern until 3. ETA the nuts were chopped nuts in the peanut butter that was in the granola bars.
This.  LO has MSPI so is not drinking WCM.  Our pedi is having us give her almond milk instead.
  • I gave my LO a whole almond yesterday.  I watched him eat it and he chewed it up.  He has 13 teeth though.  But I'm definitely not making a habit out of it unless I can really watch him eat it. No reactions.
