always wants to be held

My son is a little over 5 weeks old. The past few days he wants to be held constantly if he's awake. I used to be able to put him in his swing and he was content, but now almost never. Anyone else? Does this just seem like a phase?

Re: always wants to be held

  • LO was like that during weeks 5 and 6. I think it was part of his growth spurt, he was just cranky in general and being held comforted him.

  • DS started this around 3 weeks I think. He's 7 weeks now and still doing it, although the last few days he's been sleeping 1-2 hour spurts in the pnp at night again. All I can say is thank goodness for baby wearing!

This makes me have hope it will change!! I've been dealing with this and spitting up nonstop. Plus lo is now crying every time we bottle feed him. He only wants the breast

Is the bottle too fast or slow for him?

  • I experienced the same as PP -- weeks 5 & 6 are usually a one-two developmental punch (cognitive & physical), and my little guy was no longer content to just hang out on his own in his swing.  He wanted to be held a ton.  Ever since the spurts he's become a more social creature and wants to be near us and interacting while he's awake, which I think is a great thing!  If I'm eating and don't want him in a wrap because I might drop food on his head, I put him in the RnP and pull it up to the table, and rock it with my foot and talk to him while I'm eating.  "My time"/chore time now only happens during DS's nap time, but I love having a personable little dude around!

Yep! Colton is much more alert and social now. He loves to just look around.

  • Sounds like the 6 week growth spurt. I spent quite a few days in tears because I just couldn't console DD. I read somewhere that crying peaks at 6 weeks and gets better after that. DD is now almost 9 weeks and much more chill. She smiles and likes to look around whole laying on her blanket. It will get better mama!

  • O just loves to be held. I will put him on his play mat while I am doing something, or in his bouncer and he will only tolerate both for a few minutes. I put him in his swing and he does pretty well and will end up falling asleep. I have been using the Ergo but the infant insert is so damn hot- I have to take it off after about 30 min of wearing it. That's inside too in my a/c house set at 73 degrees. I went today to try and buy the K'tan breeze but they didn't have my size. I tried on the regular one, and loved it, but it's still pretty warm for this Texas heat. I am ordering the breeze, and hope it works out for us. I love being able to wear him and get things done.
O loves watching the fan. If the play mat, swing or bouncer fails I will lay him on his blanket on the couch and he looks up at the fan. It allows me to do a few little things around the house at least.

  • @eschario, it's probably just a phase. that's what I tell myself about everything, and it's usually true. :)

Mine wants to be held while sleeping. He can be sound asleep and as soon as you put him down he's awake and starts crying until he's picked up. We don't know what to do. Not only does he not sleep much, but when he does we can't even catch a nap because we're sitting up holding him.
  • Around five/six weeks after birth is usually when baby's first leap happens. It's a tough time, as we learned as well! I highly recommend The Wonder Weeks app. It shows you when baby will be going through a growth spurt/leap and what to expect from them. We just went through our second leap at eight/nine weeks and it was great to know what to watch for, what he was experiencing, what he was gaining as far as abilities go. These phases will come and go, so good luck!

We lost our first (EDD 07/23/12) after finding out at 12 weeks there was no longer a heartbeat. Our rainbow was born 05/22/13 and was worth all we went through.

This!! What is it?? He will be passed out and as soon as the thought crosses my mind to have him sleep somewhere other than on top of me he wakes up! Guys, I birthed a True Blood fairy :)

  • My girl has been wanting to be held constantly since about week 2 and she is 5 weeks now. She hates the swing with a passion and I get maybe 5 minutes in her bouncy seat. She has started holding on to my shirt when she falls asleep and when I go to put her down she instantly wakes up. ( I now put a burp rag on my shoulder and she holds that so when I put her down I don't have to pry my shirt from her little hands.) My LO is the youngest of 5 so I have to have a free hand sometimes. I totally understand how you all feel!
