PSA re: car seats

always, always, ALWAYS check your car seats after having your car cleaned. I went to go put the kids back in the car today and James's seat was facing the wrong way. I went around to Grace's side of the car to put him in her seat while I was fixing his. Her seat wasn't LATCHED! Apparently the guy took both seats out of the car to vacuum and just placed them back on the seat. Had James's seat been facing the proper direction I never would have noticed, would have strapped both of my kids into car seats that weren't latched or tethered and driven off that way. What's even scarier is how many other carseats did this guy take out and the parents didn't notice?! The manager was very apologetic and stated it was against company policy for their employees to unbuckle the carseats, but still it happened.

  • I find it kind of odd that you didn't take them out before getting the car detailed to get a better clean.

Yeah, this. There's gross crap that gets under car seats, I'd want that cleaned. Plus, the neurotic part of me checks my car seats to see if they've been messed with when someone has been driving (even dh, because the Radian baffles him).
  • Hm, if I was having my car detailed I would remove the car seats myself and install them back in myself.  I don't trust ANYONE to install the car seats in my car- DH included.

Really, you wouldn't have noticed that the seat wasn't latched?  I feel like I would have noticed right away because 1) it would have moved side-to-side a bit when I went to put her in and 2) When the seat is latched in properly, there's a noticeable dip in the seat of the car due to the pressure of the carseat being tightened down.  Just my opinion...

Also, totally doesn't surprise me that if you are getting a full detailing, that they would take the carseats out and do a full clean of the car seats (even though that's not their policy, as they say).  I wish we could spend the money on having someone else clean the interior of our cars.  I HATE cleaning my interior.
I was going to say same thing.

It wasn't a full detailing, just vacuuming/wiping down the interior. I've taken my car to them dozens of times and never once did they touch the carseats. I never would have thought to double check the carseats b/c they have never moved them before. Perhaps I would have noticed that the seat wasn't latched if it moved, but seriously- when it's hot, you have 2 kids you're trying to get strapped in, it could easily have been over looked.
