Is it too soon to be thinking about breast pumps?

I'm pregnant with my 2nd baby, and for some reason today I started thinking about the Medela electric breast-pump I had used with my son. Last time I used it was probably a year ago, maybe a little longer. Is it safe to re-use the same pump, so long as I replace the tubes and shields? It's my own pump, not borrowing from someone else. What are you ladies planning to do?

  • I think its fine to re-use.  I'd probably just sterilize all the parts before you start using them again.  At least that is what I'm planning on doing.

  • I am also going to reuse mine, it was $300 after all! Like PPs said I will just be sure to thoroughly sterilize everything before #2 arrives.

  • I plan on using mine again. If you are worried, you could buy new tubing. I think the general consensus out on "the web". Is that it is fine to reuse your own pump, just not to buy used from someone else.

Definitely reuse it.  I used my sister's pump last time but I'm not sure on using it again because it's now 5 years old and has been used for 4 children total.  It's probably fine, but I had issues with supply last time so I'm paranoid.

  • Mine is 7 years old and I plan to reuse it I will buy new tubes and such.
  • Some insurance companies will pay for them now, a change from when I had DD1. I used my best friend's and just got all the new tubing and shields. It is also about 7 years old and has been through 3 kids, so I am going to take advantage of insurance paying for a new one!

  • I plan on using my medela as well and it's been 6 months since I used it. I will only replace the tubing and I will sanitize the shields. Why buy new ones? Your milk barely even touches them anyway. I will probably request the tubing at the hospital like I did last time. I had two sets and it was sooo nice!

  • I'd def reuse the same pump. I have an Ameda Purely Yours pump and def plan to use it again. Now if I only knew where it was (we've moved TWICE since I've stopped BFing/pumping)...

  • I'll be reusing mine.  But I'm still using it occasionally for #1 anyway, so it's never had a break.

  • My plan was to reuse but I may take advantage of the FSA deal and pick up a new one as well. If nothing else, it will give me a spare to keep at work when I go back!
