Naps - How long do you wait?

If your LO is fighting a nap, how long do you wait before you get him out of the crib?

For background, DS is still transitioning from two naps to one. This afternoon he was showing tons of signs of being very tired only 3 hours after his midday nap, so I did our nap routine and put him in the crib. He's been in there playing for 30 minutes now and shows no sign of actually sleeping. He has only a blanket and his lovey, but somehow he's still been able to entertain himself. (Why is it not so easy to entertain him in the grocery buggy?? Question for another day...) Just curious to see what other moms do.

  • In that situation, I would leave him until he fell asleep/woke up OR until he started to fuss.  If he's playing happily, I take it as a sign that he may have needed a little quiet time and I also think he's probably still resting even though he's not sleeping.

  • I wait a whole hour if he's not crying!
  • I usually do 45 min if she isn't crying.  My pedi told me when DD was only a few months old that if they are happy but refusing to nap that at least they are getting some forced downtime from being stimulated.

  • As long as he's happy, I'd let him play.  Sometimes my little guy babbles for quite a while in his bed before he falls asleep.

  • If my daughter is playing I'll wait and see because sometimes she just wants some quiet time and other times she'll play herself to sleep. When she starts to fuss/is fussing already I wait 15 minutes before I go in and get her and then I'll read a book with her, change her diaper if it's necessary again (sometimes she's fussy because after I put her down she goes potty), or I'll walk around with her in my arms while humming or singing a lullaby for another 15 minutes before trying again. My daughter is on a pretty secure schedule so when it's naptime, it's naptime and usually she falls asleep, but sometimes she needs just a little bit more cuddling or she's too wound up and I try to keep her from anything stimulating like toys that talk or light up and let her play with her stuffed animals that (at most) rattle.
  • I also leave her until she cries.

Downtime is good for everyone. It's also so fun to listen to her chat with herself.

  • If she's happy I let her go. Once she's fussing I'll check her diaper and lay her back down. it's VERY rare that she doesn't end up going down at all.

  • My DS does this at night sometimes. I leave him. With crying/whining, I check him on the monitor. If he's standing, I get him. If he's laying down & closing his eyes, or trying to get comfortable and whining, I leave him.

  • Ditto everyone else - if he's not crying or fussing, I'll leave him in there until he does. Most of the time he falls asleep, but sometimes he's just content to play with the two stuffed animals we have in his crib.

This is exactly what I would suggest.  Between mornings, naps, and nighttime, DS spends at least an hour or two in his crib just playing and reading books by himself perfectly content.
