NBR: Wedding Dress Question

Do you think it's bad luck to sell your wedding dress? I've been storing mine for the last (almost 5 years -wee!) and it takes up our entire guest bedroom closet. It's absolutely beautiful and I know it could make another girl very happy but I'm kind of superstitious (crazy I know) and wanted to see what others thought about it. I don't know anyone who's getting married who might need it. I have 2 boys so I'm not saving it for any daughters and if my reaction to seeing my mother's dress is any indicator of what to expect from future generations.... I didn't have it preserved because I wasn't planning to keep it, yet here it is.

What say you ladies?

Here's a cellphone pic of our wedding album, just for giggles :)

Re: NBR: Wedding Dress Question

  • So pretty! I think if you can share the love of the dress, go for it! I get pretty sentimental/superstitious, but with something like this, I'd say if you're comfortable with it you should just do it.

  • I'm not selling mine. I figure even if my girls don't want the actual dress, maybe they would like parts of it. Plus I only spent $800 on it so I don't think I would get much for it.

  • I don't think it's bad luck. Selling your wedding dress isn't going to send your marriage into a tail spin and end up divorced in 6 months. I think it's really generous of you to want to maybe share your dress with a bride who might not be able to afford such a nice one at full price. Like Rusalka said, if you're ok with selling it, go for it.

With that said, would I ever sell mine? No way :) Personally, I get really attached to some of my possessions. I would never sell my wedding dress because it's far too important to me, and would be heartbroken if something were to happen to it.  I don't care if DD never wants to wear it. I'm not saving it for her, I'm saving it for me.

  • I don't think it's bad luck. Personally, I'm hugely sentimental so my dress was cleaned, pressed and placed in a dress kit box. It's in my walk in closet on display (there is a see through panel on one side) so whenever I walk into our closet I get a glimpse of the bodice. LOVE IT!

  • I had planned to donate my dress to Brides Against Breast Cancer, but it was ruined by shoddy dry cleaning before I had a chance.  So, I am clearly of the "not superstitious" camp.  Since only the front of the dress could be salvaged, that is preserved in a box and I am hopeful that at some point the beautiful lace panels running down the front can be re-used (probably more likely if this LO is a girl).

  • I donated mine to the Salvation Army two years after the wedding.  Still married nine years now.  I saw no reason to keep it as space is at a premium in my house. I do miss it from time to time but it won't fit me anymore and DD will want her own futuristic gown ;)

  • I still have mine and it's still hanging in the bag, never cleaned 5 years later.  I loved my dress but I doubt I'll ever need it for anything.  Plus I'm too fat to fit into it now.

  • I think if you want to sell it go for it . . . tbh, I've never even heard of superstitions related to getting rid of your wedding dress.  I know mine's around here somewhere, but we've moved so many times after the wedding, that I'm not even sure where :P

I'm in the sell/donate camp, especially if you can find a good cause.  I'd think that the good karma from that would far outweigh any bad juju from not having it anymore.

Also, LOVE that pic.  You pretty.
