Anyone else have a baby who still isn't crawling?

Just curious. My LO is still mostly immobile. She sits like a champ, but doesn't seem interested in moving. At all. If she gets tired of sitting, she topples over and "lays there like a beached whale," as her day care teacher put it. She was fairly late with learning to roll over (almost 5 months old when she rolled for the first time). She still doesn't roll often, and even now she'll get caught on her arm and get stuck. She can stand if I stand her up, but she doesn't like it and tries to sit down again after a few seconds. When she's sitting, she will spin herself around to face in different directions, and she will lean over to reach for toys, but that's about it. The most she's ever moved is about a foot in any direction.

Anyway, I know that crawling isn't really a developmental milestone and that some babies never crawl, but I'm starting to worry about it despite my best efforts not to. :) I think it is mostly her personality, and maybe also it's because she's getting pretty chubby from sitting around all the time! But it also seems like she's starting to get frustrated about being immobile, even though she never makes any effort to move. Does anyone else have an immobile baby? Or a late mover?

Re: Anyone else have a baby who still isn't crawling?

  • My LO will be 10 months aug 2nd and she does not crawl. She got really good at rolling around 5 months but now has little interest. She can scoot on her butt on a slippery surface and she can spin around on her tummy but there's nothing like crawling. I think she might just skip it. I hear you--I get worried sometimes but try I remember that she'll most likely be absolutely fine and I will miss her immobile days soon enough! It does help to know thee are other lazy babies like ours!

  • K crawls minimally, just starting in the last week. She does have this system where she rolls, sits up, adjusts her direction, rolls again, etc., which she has really perfected, and she pulls up to stand and walks while her hands are held, so she is definitely getting mobile. Like PP said, crawling is not a milestone because lots of babies skip it. Just try to encourage LO to move by placing things out of reach, and don't be afraid to let her get a little frustrated (just a little). She'll get there. How is her muscle tone and her fine motor skills? If those are on track, she should be okay.

  • I was worried about my LO too. He started crawling about a week ago at 10.5 months old. He had no interest in it either and is so lazy about it. He crawls to where he can just reach whathe wants. Then he lays on his belly, stretches and pulls the toy to him. She will get there in hwr own time. Good luck. :)

  • Stella bum scoots on the hardwood/lino and is rocking and will occasionally go backwards in her crib... but I'm not concerned. She is just over 10 months old (14th), her big sis crawled at 10 1/2 months and walked at 17 months.

I am a lot less worried about it this round. With Madi I was paranoid lol!

  • Colby is mobile but doesn't crawl.  He rolls, scoots on his bum, spins on his belly and his bum, and scoots backwards on his belly.  He is holding our hands and walking a ton lately. He is almost 10 months.  Crawling isn't a milestone. Try to work with her strengthening her leg muscles by standing and learning to walk.

I'm glad to hear that there are other lazy babies out there. :) Yeah, her fine motor skills and muscle tone seem fine. I've been doing the Ages and Stages questionnaires every two months and she always just barely makes the cutoff on gross motor skills, but she is right on track with everything else.

I'll keep encouraging her to move. She kind of exercises her legs by rubbing her feet back and forth on the floor while she's sitting. Maybe she's building up more strength so that she can get up and take off running one of these days. :)
  • DS just started crawling literally yesterday.

He rolled over maybe three times in his life before that. If he's on his back, he doesn't move. Which is good for the crib...I don't have to lower it yet

  • LO still doesn't crawl. He kinda scoots and spins around but other than that, he has no interest.
My 2 yr old was a late crawler ( 11 and a half months) so I'm not worried right now. He will probably be a late walker too like his brother ( 16 months)

  • My son doesn't crawl either. Like yours, he is a champ at sitting- he'll sit all day! He didn't begin sitting on his own until almost 7 months old and at 9 months finally started baring weight on his legs. About a week ago he learned how to roll from belly to back (he only would go back to belly) and now thinks he is all big and bad because he uses it as is mode of transportation. He just turned 10 months on Friday, so don't stress :)
  • My LO didn't start crawling, at all, until 11m. Now he's really just army crawling and he's getting pretty good at it.

  • Hi all,

I just wanted to post an update in case anyone with similar issues searches and finds this. My daughter finally started scooting on her butt at 11.5 months. At her 12 month well check, the ped referred us to Early Intervention since she still isn't pulling up to her feet and she also wasn't able to get herself into a sitting position (she has *finally* figured out how to do that in the last week!).

The EI evaluation happened a couple of weeks ago (on her 13 month birthday) and showed that her gross motor skills are in the 7-8.5 month range. Based on how she moves around, they think she might have a vestibular sensory processing issue that makes her afraid of changing her position too much (she stays as upright as possible while scooting around and hates being tipped forward or backward). It's called gravitational insecurity, which seems like a odd name to me, but whatever! We're supposed to work with her by swinging and bouncing her and just getting her more used to different kinds of movement. The goal is to help her catch up on motor skills so that she'll be walking by 18 months.

Anyway, I just wanted to post a follow-up in case it is helpful to anyone! I had never heard of gravitational insecurity. I figured that she didn't like to move around just because she's very cautious and/or lazy, but it seems that there was more to it than that.
  • Glad you are figuring things out and hope she gets used to the different movements soon.

  • That's great that you guys are figuring out ways to help her. Good luck with everything, I hope she starts moving around more soon! Thanks for the update.

  • Sounds like she's doing well and EI is working out! We had EI for my LO too from about 6m to 1 year old. They were very helpful with his gross motor skills.

    Good luck!

  • Glad to hear she is doing well!  DS1 worked with EI starting at 4 months old and we still get speech OT and PT through our school district's Early Childhood Program.  It's great that you got assistant so early!

  • Thanks all! I'm so glad to have some more information and people to help us out with this. She's rocking the gross motor skills more every day! :)
  • Thanks for the update. This sounds a lot like my LO actually. I'm going to give it about a month more but if she hasn't improved much I think we're going to see her pedi. She definitely doesn't like not being upright sitting. She forgot how to roll over for a while and only just started doing that again.

She has a peculiar way of sitting up from lying down. She pushes up through a split to get to sitting and that's the only way she can do it. (So if she's on her back, she either rolls over first or lays there and yells). She bum scoots and clearly has no idea how to crawl.

I'm not overly worried about milestones usually but I just have a feeling she's much further behind than she should be. :-/
