I need a new car :(

We're having twins sometime in February or early March who knows at this point! So very new to this. I am due for a new vehicle anyway. My suv is 10 years old, it has over 120,000 miles, and it doesn't have much of trade in value as it is so I need to make this decision soon. I will need to have other people in the car with me besides in a front seat. So I'm thinking something with captain's chairs? Buick Enclave? GMC Acadia? Anyone have a solid answer and reason for this question? Thanks!

Re: I need a new car :(

  • GMC Acadia works for my aunt and uncle and their family (4 kids, 17 yr old, id. twin 16 yr old, 12 yr old). They love theirs. I have a mini van but if I had the choice, I would have chosen an SUV with 3rd row seating. Honda Pilots are nice as well. My neighbor has one and I have car envy. Lol.

  • Tell me about it. My sister has an enclave with a headphone system and DVD player. It's amazing!
  • Wow! That does sound amazing!!! :-)
  • We have an Acura MDX and a Subaru Forester. The MDX was purchased after we found out we were having twins and would need to have 3 in car seats. It has third row seating [which we don't use on the daily as all kids are across the 2nd row], is wide enough to accommodate three across in the second row, yet small enough that I can drive and park in the city [a must for us]. It's a big car, but not a behemoth to drive like some others in its class.

  • The Acura MDX was my dream vehicle of choice but now that I'm having twins that means at times I'll have four kids with me. My 2 year long dream of owning an MDX is gone. But these babies are a blessing from God and I have to keep reminding myself. I don't have a choice but to get something with third row seating access. :\
  • Just a question: why is 10 years old with 120K not good? I am not sure how many seats it has... which I am guessing is the problem, but we have a 1998 Suburaban with right about that many miles on it (if not more... its been a while since I drove it) and it is still going strong, getting its projected 14 mpg ("combined" city and highway) fuel economy per the .gov site.
I love that boat (minus the horrible gas mileage... but its an SUV so, its gonna guzzle no matter what).
From my experience with older cars you WILL get more money from a private sale than you would from a trade-in. And older cars are usually past the "oh crap that wasn't supposed to happen" part of their lives.

  • I have one DD, and twins on the way, also due in Feb or Mar. I currently own a Honda Pilot and its my third Pilot because I love it that much. I leased the first two, & bought the third.

Unfortunately I cannot make two Carseats and a convertible seat for my almost 2 year old work in the Pilot. The second row is a 1/3 split so my DD would need to climb over the second row to get to the 3rd row. I'm sad but we'll be getting a minivan in the fall. I'm going to get a bumper sticker for it that says "I used to be cool." Haha.

I thought pilots had 3 LATCH across the back? The spacing is a little funky, but we fit one convertible and two infant seats in the back of an MDX, which is the same platform as a pilot.

  • I heart my Pilot. I was originally driving a Civic, so the thing felt like I was driving a semi for a couple of weeks, but now I'm totally comfortable with it. :) And, all the space! Love.

  • We are also looking for a "new" car. I have a Honda Accord and DH has a Nissan Xterra. The plan is to keep the Accord for DH to drive to work and I'll probably get a Honda Odyssey (or if DH wins, a Suburban). My sister has a Honda Odyssey and I love it. So roomy.

I have a Mazda cx-7 it's not even two years old but my daughter will just turn two when the twins arrive so we need something bigger as well. I love my car :( we are thinking Honda oddessey. I can't believe I'll be driving a minivan!

Yeah, for DW and I as soon as we found out it was twins were said "I guess we are van people now". The Odyssey is a bit on the pricy side, so we're going to be looking at other vans as well. The Grand Caravan for example is priced a bit lower, so we'll at least check it out.

My loving hubby just sold his Jeep Liberty (his "first love" as far as vehicles go) and got a Chrysler Town & Country.  There was no way we could fit 2 car seats in the Jeep, plus we have a 15 yr old, so this way the babies can be in the second row (captains chairs) and he can be in the back with a lot of leg room to stretch out between the middle seats (he'll be a tall kid).  I did promise my hubby that once the babies are older, we'll get another Jeep for him, since by that time the 15 yr old will be 18+ and more than likely in college or on his own, not wanting to ride around with mom and dad anyway.

The van has a DVD player with headphones which we'll never use (as a kid I brought books along or my mom told me stories.  I don't want my kids to be so dependent on electronics that we can't go anywhere without "tv") and we got it used, but my hubby still loves it, despite longing for the day he can get a Jeep again.  Although, truth be told, he LOVES the reason he'll be driving a van, he's so looking forward to these 2 wonderful additions!

  • This car is too small and I've driven it literally all over the country. I used to take my band out on tour with it and pull a trailer for years! It's been across the country twice and up and down both coasts so many times. It's falling apart and it's time to move on.
  • I love my traverse but with three kids am quickly realizing I need a suburban. If you can afford the gas I say go big!

  • We purchased a Pilot in love it.  We have our DS who is 2 sit in the 3rd row and the twins sit in the 2nd row.  There is still room in the 2nd row for someone else to sit there, and ample space in the cargo area to fit 2 strollers and a couple grocery bags if needed! I love the ride and the feeling of being up high, but its not too big either!

Why can't you make it work? We have a 2 year old in addition to our twins.  Our DS sits in the 3rd row and the twins sit in the 2nd row! Plus, we have extra space!

  • Lisa did you mean me? Why can't I make my car work? It's not big enough. I think I need to go with the Enclave or Acadia. I'm worried about the double stroller in the back with all our stuff! Just to go to a store!
  • We have a Mazda 5 and love it. I always describe it as a combination of a minivan and an SUV. It's really convenient to get them in and out of it and there is TONS of room in the back with the third row seats stowed away (which is insanely easy to do). Good luck with your decision!

The new Honda Pilots have three rows instead of just two. You don't have to join the Minivan Mafia, though that's what we did and, I have to say, I love all of the extra room.

I have a Pilot and have 3 across in the middle row. It has worked great for us. We have had 2 convertible and an infant seat and now have 3 convertible. They fit fine. SO you don't necessarily need a new car. With #4 on the way, we can probably still make it work with the big boys in the back, but I think we're going to trade it in for an Odyssey.

  • I LOVE my Toyota sienna. Love. I don't know why people are so against minivans. This car rocks and makes our lives sooo much easier! I have a 4year old, 2 year old and 1 month old twin girls.
  • I hear ya! We're expecting twins in February, currently have a Kia Sportage, love it! But looking into mini vans & a Ford Flex for more space! Talked to several owners of Ford Flexes, all great reviews! Wish ya the best!
