I hate contractions

I've been having contractions for the past 3 weeks.  Not always timeable, but many times they are.  My OB says that it's fine, I'm only at 2cm and 50%, but to call if "things start to feel different".  well that is crap.  My contractions felt "different" the other night and I had to go to L&D and was admitted for the night. I was given more meds and blah blah (i know you guys know the drill) and the contractions have slowed.  Right now, I'm having contractions that are 5 minutes apart, they don't hurt and I know this isn't a reason my OB would have me call.  But even for a second time mom, this crap is scary.  I know that I probably look crazy every time I go to L&D. All the nurses know my name and I have my own room. ha.  (at least it's a very small hospital so there aren't a ton of nurses).

I am just frustrated by what is important to call about and what is not.  I feel like an ass pretty much every time I call my OB, though I know that's what I am supposed to do.  Blah. Just blah.

Anyone want to join my pity party? We can have Twinkies, Tacos, and Coke.  Oh and cupcakes.

  • Oohh cupcakes! I'm the same way at my hospital's L&D! I hate going and they know it. They're good to me though. It is so frustrating trying to figure out when to go. I had close contractions the other night and didn't go. It finally calmed down. I just hate laying over there.

  • I'd join but i have GD. Lol GD humor. I feel like a nut bag too. I was admitted twice before the doctors decided to keep me for a very elongated stay. Contractions are so annoying and worrisome. I usually just chug water and if it's night time, try to go to sleep. Sometimes my neurosis just makes them worse!
  • My Dr has me go in if I am having more than 5 contractions in an hour consistently, even if they don't hurt. Even if they don't hurt they can make you dilate, and so it is good to get them stopped if you are having a lot. That is what my Dr says to me anyway. I hope yours chill out so you don't have to go in. It is no fun at all!!

That's what my doctor told me at first too, until none of my contractions were doing anything.  But I'm scared that at any point they could start doing something. ugh. It's just such a crappy guessing game.

  • I have no idea when I am having contractions and that scares the hell out of me. I wish I could feel them. I watch my monitor here at the hospital and try to identify them, but I have had no success at all. It sucks.

Are they telling you that you're having them often?  I wonder if they don't do as much if you can not feel them? On the monitor, they will look like a hill.

  • I understand your dilemma. It's so hard to tell when it's really necessary to go in. I hate being stuck in triage with IV's and all the meds.  Sometimes I think the stress of being there makes things worse.  I was having them 8 minutes apart earlier today.  I have an at-home monitor though, so I am lucky.  I can monitor and have the nurse tell me if I need to go in now.  Fortunately I got to stay at home this time.

An at home monitor would definitely help!  When mine start up, they are typically 3 to 7 minutes apart, but they don't "do anything". But three minutes apart is scary!

We can see them ob the monitor. I had lots of them before Procardia. Since then, they have dropped to 1 -3 per hour.

I had no idea there's an at home monitor. I need to ask about that.

I'm waiting for the results of the FFN test to see if the contractions are doing anything.

The monitor I have at home doesn't show me a print-out, but a nurse calls me about 20 minutes after each session to tell me how many contractions I had that lasted at least 40 seconds or longer.  My doctor ordered it.

Awesome they are keeping you informed!  How often do you have to do it?

This for me too. I had my first NST yesterday and had 5 or 6 in 30 mins. I had no idea.

  • I could have written this exact post!  I started having BH at 24 weeks.  I was in L&D at 25 weeks to monitor them.  They've told me that if I get 6 an hour to go in.  That has happened so many times since 25 weeks, and I never went back in.  My doctor told me that wasn't very smart of me, but figured since I was OK then it was fine.  But don't do it again.  Like you said, I could have been to L&D 15 times by now.  It's tough to decide when to go, and very stressful!
