Not babbling

LO is almost 13 months and does not really babble. Well, she does, maybe twice a day for a few minutes, usually when she's upset about something, so it sounds like a long complaint. But no regular happy babbling. She has good receptive language skills - understands a whole lot (so much so H and I have taken to spelling words when we don't want her to understand), responds to requests like "show me___," "pull my nose," "clap your hands," and so on. But she says only 2 words - dadda and car keys(!) To be honest, I wouldn't be too concerned about that if it wasn't for the lack of babbling - which everything I read says she should be doing. Should I be concerned?

Re: Not babbling

  • I wouldn't be too concerned at this point. As mentioned in previous threads, there are some babies who seem to internalize everything they are learning until one day it all just comes out and you can't get them to shut up. Also I think babies who excel in motor development seem to take longer to speak. My kid doesn't say much but she's very physical. I think the speech will take some time.

  • I forgot to mention, I talked to the NP we met with for T's one year appointment about it, and he said the fact that she understands simple commands and will respond to words she knows is a great sign!

Is she around others kids or people? That may help a lot. Also something stimulating like Gymboree class? After we leave that class and even during due to the puppet they go a mile a minute babbling. I would pursue things like that. If your ped isn't worried don't worry. She may just be a quieter kid, and she sounds highly perceptive.
  • Is LO working on a physical skill, like walking? Sometimes language skills regress while they're working on physical skills

  • Is she meeting the other milestones okay?

Lots of other parents have told me there kids didn't talk much (even babble) until closer to two.  Just keep talking to her and encouraging it.

I just went for DD 12-month check up. I told the doc DD babbles a lot but doesn't say many clear words.  The doc said she expects her to be saying a few things by the next checkup at 18 months.

  • Well, she climbs all over the place and is experimenting with standing up and letting go for a few seconds, but isn't really interested in walking, even with support. So I'm not sure her expressive language is behind because she's focused on that aspect. But she is one heck of a hyperactive baby. Won't sit still for a second. We used to do Gymboree and library story time (stopped a few weeks ago as we're in the middle of an international move) ...the last class, she tried to steal every one else's toys and managed to pull down a little boy's pants, so I'm not sure she's introverted either.

Her pedi isn't concerned and thinks my expectations are too high (but her pedi is very hands off) but I suspect few docs will want to intervene until at least 15 months. So maybe I have no choice but to wait. She's been babbling a bit more today actually... I've been trying to repeat the few things she says back to her, hoping to prolong the interaction... working somewhat.

    Thanks for the feedback folks!
