Medela Users? Quick Question

I think I've pretty much decided that the medela double electric on-the-go pump is the one that seems like it'll work best for me. I appreciate the battery back up and it seems like all of the bits n pieces are easily found at local stores. Several of my girlfriends have used it and liked it.

I'm just wondering if anyone has anything specifically about the medela pump that I should know? Especially if you really really liked it or really really hated it, can you tell me why? Thx!

    I loved mine!
I also loved their accessories.  I used the wipes, microwave steaming bags, and freezer storage bags.
I saw those too - worth it? I am really committed to breastfeeding and have to go back to work at 8 weeks so I figure it is absolutely crucial to have decent equipment.

I'll throw in my 2 cents, but I'm not the best source. I had a manual pump which was fine for the few times I needed to pump. I had a job offer, bought the pump, and the position lost funding. I pumped once or twice a week, but not with any real routine. For me, I felt like I got a better response from the manual pump. When both sides were being used at once, the Medela always felt very weak to me. I would usually do one side and then do the other to help with that.

That said, I don't think it's super practical to pump at work with a manual pump. I don't know how other electric pumps compare to the Medela and everyone I know uses the Medela. I think it's a sound purchase.

Good to hear - thanks! A friend told me that sometimes she'd feed the baby on one side and pump on the other because she didn't think she was getting enough with the pump on both sides.

  • Generally you can get more with a manual pump but it is just not practical if you are using it routinely. Get a double electric! I love my Madela!

I also had a single manual that I stuck in my purse when we were out and the electric wasn't convenient or for the car. It was also awesome when I had a blocked duct and pumped in the hot shower...it felt awesome!
  • The only down side of the Medela is that it's not a closed system.  However, it was never a problem for me and I pumped for a year at least 3-4 times a day every day, more when I was an EP'er.  I read a lot of reviews, and the Medela appears to be the best all around.  I love that the funnels are detachable.  This makes hands-free pumping so much easier!

So I say go for it.  You really can't go wrong with the PISA.

Get more in terms of milk quantity? Might be worth having a manual as well, just in case

No first hand experience, but the Medela Advanced Personal Double Pump is one of the ones offered by the medical supply company my insurance company contracts with for my area.  I was leaning toward that one but wanted to see if my OB had a recommendation so I asked her at my appointment yesterday.  She said she used a Medela and so had all her friends, so that's the one she'd recommend.  (One of the perks of having a female OB, though not all have had kids obvs.)

Just out of curiosity, have you checked with your insurance company?  All insurers are required by the new healthcare law (Affordable Care Act/Obamacare) to cover at least part of the cost of a breast pump.  I lucked out in that mine covers 100% of the pump and doesn't require me to pay up front and be reimbursed, it just gets billed directly to them--I just called them to double check.  So if you haven't checked with your insurer first, you might want to before shelling out three hundred bucks for a Medela.  Or if you're catching the breast pump sale at BRU, keep the receipt in case you find out later that you can get it covered.
Just curious as to when they are suppose to start covering them? I called mine, Tricare, and they told me they don't cover them at all unless you have a baby in the NICU. Wonder if that is there way if covering them.

Also there are large state plans that are "grandfathered in" through loop holes in Obamacare, so they aren't forced to cover it.
