Bfing and work travel?

I go back to work aug 13. I'm supposed to roll back onto the project I was managing when I went out on maternity leave. Here's the thing... It may require quite a bit of travel.

I've been EBF. In addition, don't think I want to leave LO a bunch...

Anyone else been in this position before? I may be able to switch with my boss and he can run the project an I would run the PMO instead but don't think that's best career wise although LO is definitely my priority...

Re: Bfing and work travel?

  • I've had to be away from DD a few times now overnight, and I just take the pump so I can keep up with her when I'm gone. It's a bit of a PITA, but I figure that's the tradeoff for being a working mom. I have to fly for the first time with the pump next week. Again, kind of a pain, but worth it, IMO.

  • How old is your LO? If your LO is older than 6 months I might leave him/her overnight for maybe one night at at time, but honestly I wouldn't leave a smaller baby overnight.  For me personally, my girls nursed quite a bit when I came home from work and at night.  I couldn't have left them overnight for several nights.  I would just sit down and have an honest talk with your boss and see if you can postpone travel for a few months.  Good luck either way!

  • I nursed both kids for a little over a year, and pushed off all business travel until after that year.  I am weaning DD right now, and heading on two business trips in the next three weeks.  How long will you be gone?  If you are talking overnight or two nights, I'd say go for it.  But not for a whole week.  LO needs you at this stage. (Not that LO won't always need you, but definitely at this age).

  • I have pumped but my company allowed children to come and stay with you (you had to have a sitter like husband or family) and gave me a single room with a fridge. Ask your HR to see if they offer that, I didn't know it before I actually had a kid because I never asked. I do not think they pay for travel for your family but they can stay in the room with you. Do you work for a coporate company.
