Need GD food advice/help

I have mostly been able to keep my numbers where they need to be, but every once in a while I have a high number.  I needed to eat out today, so I did research this morning and decided on a McDonald's Grilled Chicken Southwest Salad with the Southwest dressing.  It had lettuce, small amount of corn and beans, grilled chicken and tortilla strips.  The nutrition info on McD's website said it had 28g protein and 39g carbs.  My lunch should have at least 21g protein and 45g carbs.  So I thought I did well.  Then I tested and my number was 23 points over my limit.  I was so disappointed in myself.  Can anyone help me guess what I may have done wrong?  Do you think McD's info is wrong?  Every day since I have started this (last Monday) I have had at least one number high, and it's not consistent.  So I'm having so much trouble trying to get this right.  I thought I was finally getting the hang of this after getting breakfast under control.  I really just wanted one day where all of my numbers were good.

  • I wouldn't stress over one bad number. Now you know to stay away from McDonald's. It's probably not really the fact that McDonald's had the wrong nutritional information, but more of the way your body reacted to it. My nutritionist said it's normal for your sugar to spike randomly even if you've been eating the same thing for the past week and have had no problem. If it becomes a common occurrence then you should call. But if it is just one bad number don't sweat it.

  • It could be the type of carbs in the salad. Some women find that certain carbs send their numbers high even if they are within the serving limit. I could eat 30g of carbs in the form of whole wheat bread and be fine, but 30g of carbs in the form of corn on the cob would send me high.

It could also just be that your hormones are wonky and you may need to tweak the diet more. I would take all the info on your numbers and what you are eating to your next appt and talk to your dr/dietitian and see if they have some guidance for you.

  • I would guess it is the sugar in the salad dressing. I stay away from salad dressings. It could have also been residual from your morning meal, if you lacked water in between lunch and lunch-test, lack of movement, random food trigger, etc. Just stay away from that meal now. I think this is why GD has a stigma of making food routine, i.e. when I find a breakfast that works for me I eat that breakfast every day for the next 2 months because I like my numbers to be predictable. I don’t try and get fancy, I eat a chicken salad wrap, cheese sticks and greek yogurt every damn day for lunch… Not saying that you can’t get fancy but just note that you’ll have some varied numbers if you chose to take that path. If you ever doubt a meal (what it will do to your tests) drink 32 oz of water before your test and walk for at least 10 min. between meal and test. This always seems to help regulate my testing.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  • Thanks everyone.  This is a lot more frustrating that I thought it would be.  I really just want one day where I don't have one high number so that I can feel like I'm being successful at this.  Yesterday was close.  My lunch was only 2 points high and the rest were all under.  I really thought I could do it today

  • I agree with the others.  Don't let the high number get you down.  Different foods will react differently even if they have the same carbs.  I have found in general that if I eat out anywhere, my numbers are higher. It's good to keep a food log so you can keep track of what's working and stick with those meals.

  • Did you drink a lot of water after eating? My numbers are always higher if I eat at the higher end of my carb limit and I don't drink enough water.
