Couldn't tell the gender

I went in for my 18 week ultrasound and unfortunately they weren't able to tell for sure what the gender was. The tech said 75% girl but I think because they hasn't seen a male part. Has anyone had a similar experience.

I'm super anxious to find out the gender for planning purposes. I can't go in again until 28 weeks and I just can't wait that long. Has anyone gotten a 3d ultrasound to reveal the gender?

Re: Couldn't tell the gender

  • You are finding out the sex, not the gender. My SIL had a 3D ultrasound to find out the sex of hers. I found out at my anatomy scan, but if I hadn't found out then I probably would have just left it alone. I don't feel very comfortable with unnecessary procedures, even if it is just an u/s.

  • Can you explain what you mean by "planning purposes"? I'm just curious. You might have to wait that long and even then at 28 weeks they will consider the scan elective. The Anatomy Scan is for medical purposes to check organs and not the sex of the baby. If you really want to find out the gender then spend the money at some place like stork vision or something elective.

  • Finding out the sex of your LO is very exciting but, even myself, had to understand its a privilege not a right to know the sex of your baby.
It will make your next u/s that much more exciting to just patiently wait.
  • Planning purposes, meaning getting the nursery ready to go. Have you heard anything about stork vision?
  • Had this happen to a friend of mine, she paid for the 3D and they still weren't sure because the baby wouldn't move into a good position.  They told her she would have to wait for the delivery to find out.

  • I completely agree. I'm just very anxious and it's getting the best of me. '
  • That's good to know. Thank you!
  • You will be fine if you don't find out until birth but, if you really want to know then go to and elective place.

I went to an elective place in MD (they are not a chain) for an early ultrasound to determine the sex. It was $75 for a 5-10 minute 3D u/s with pictures and the guarantee that if we couldn't find out the sex that day, we could come back for free. The pictures were awful because it was so early (16 weeks), but they were clearly able to see a penis, and the sex was confirmed boy at our anatomy scan. Totally worth it. :)

Almost exactly this.  Except our pics ROCKED.  Those shots were much more convincing to me than the ones at the a/s.  And while she was still a little alien looking, there are a couple of adorable ones. (see below)  They also guaranteed that if we couldn't find out, that we could come back for free.  It was worth every penny in my book.

  • You can go to the 3D ultrasound place if you really want to. I did the gender reveal package which was about $50. They gave me a CD and some other things. The tech was really nice and pointed out the various obvious "hamburger". I had the anatomy scan at the hospital a few weeks later and it was confirmed, so yes they do tell you the sex then so you can choose to wait if you want.

  • Thanks so much girls! I think I'm gojng to give it a try. I've been looking up pics and I think if we have the technology why not take advantage.

I don't understand why planning the nursery requires you to know that baby's sex? Plenty of people plan their nurseries (and have done so for decades and centuries) without needing to know that sex..

Stork Vision can be expensive. I would just wait if it were me. Be reminded any request for an ultrasound later, strictly for finding out the sex, will most likely be considered elective. That gets expensive very quickly. You can plan a perfectly adorable nursery in sex neutral colors and add accents when the baby gets here. You can wait. You have no choice really unless you want to spend the money for an elective.

  • Some people are just silly. I totally understand your disappointment at not finding out the sex when you expected to. I imagine the 28 week one is medical, as I'm sure if you would have one sooner if it were elective. Id either wait till 28 weeks or pay for an elective one. They run around 65-75 here to find out just the gender - more for 4d.
Good luck! I found out with all of mine for planning purposes too. Some people elect not to find out and that's fine, but no reason to give those of us that want to know a hard time.

  • It's not really hard to understand why someone would want to know the sex for nursery decorating purposes. They simple don't want to have a gender neutral color scheme. Some people just want a pink or blue nursery. It's just that simple and it comes down to personal preference.

There are some ultra sound tech schools that may complete the u/s for free. They would have a certified technician there as well as students, but it's much cheaper and the technology is top notch
  • I would definitely want to know, too!! If they couldn't tell me at the a/s, I would be scheduling an elective without a doubt. There's absolutely no harm. :):)

I think gender neutral nurseries aren't very colorful or cute... I mean I'm no interior designer, so others could definitely pull it off. But not me. I'd want to know! I start nursery planning long before I should. So much fun!!!!!

  • The difference being that at 28w there is still approx. 3 months to decorate a nursery...plenty of time wouldn't you say?

  • i say go for it and get an elective one at a private place. it is exciting finding out the sex. I am going to have one as soon as we are able to tell. we have several places here, some as inexpensive as 35 dollars and there are a lot of tech schools that do them for free. Planning, decorating, and shopping for boy or girl stuff is important to me. We have very distinct nursery ideas for either a boy or girl and I cant wait to start. Having a baby is exciting and you should enjoy it however you want to so if you want to find out the sex GO FOR IT!!
