NBFR, SS and Kindergarten Screening

mobileL NBFR, SS and Kindergarten Screening

Well I took SS today for his screening before kindergarten. He failed all the sections except his social (he did perfect there). Gross, fine, writing he did poorly in. I would cry if it wouldn't make SS feel bad. He got halfway through cutting the circle and then decided to tear the rest. We have been working for 2.5 years now and he is still behind two years developmentally for the most part. I wish my husband would have gotten it thick head that his mother was not the ideal caregiver while he worked 24/7 during SS's early years. Ugh, I thought we had been doing so well. His Pre-K teacher said he was great, and I have seen so much improvement. I guess we are back to doing daily drills with writing and what not.

  • Sorry to hear! That has to be so frustrating

  • So what is the school doing to provide to you to get him there?  And have you had him evaluated by a specialist?  Maybe an IEP so he CAN get the extra help?

Also, have you looked at an Sylvian type place?  Taking YOU out of the equation sometimes help.  I know that I had to stop acitvely teaching my DD because we are just not the correct fit. That isn't an indictment on ME or MY teaching or HER and HER ability to learn.

  • If he is that far before was he tested for early intervention or your schools special Ed preschool? If you are not a professional and working with him already it means he needs a professionals help and he will fall farther behind.

  • I wasn't clear about the mother portion. I was talking about my MIL, not BM (she has never been a consistent part of SS's life).

The guidance counselor suggested seeing how he improves, and then going from there. They think he will catch on because while he can only pass the 3 year old skills he can write his name, identify his alphabet, and perform most of the activities for me. We live in a small town, so there are not very many resources. A huge factor is that SS spent 3 years of his life in a playpen when he was at home. My MIL just wasn't the best choice. It is what it is. My H made too much for government assistance, and too little to enroll him in a care program. I was just down in the dumps about his assessment going so poorly, and me knowing (thinking) he is capable of completing most of the tasks presented. I haven't been able to convince my H that SS need therapy... I can only push the school to suggest it if they feel it is necessary. The next time I talk to the counselor I will ask if we can have a full evaluation. I was given specific tasks to work on him with at home. We are continuing to work on his writing (he can write the alphabet for me, but not for the test), we are to cut out large shapes, and he is doing hand exercises like picking noodles up with tweezers. She said it was good he is playing soccer for his gross motor skills.

  • Thank you so much! I will talk with my H about it, and let him know what advice and insight you have offered. Again, thank you.
