Eating help!

I EP. My pedi is having me add a scoop of formula to her bottle of bm to get her weight up. Lately (today and yesterday) she hasn't wanted to eat. She's only had about 5.5 ounces so far today! I am pretty sure she is hungry but just doesn't seem to want the bottle. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any tips on getting her to eat? I'm so afraid that she is starving :-(
Idk if this matters or not but we are currently using enfamil premium newborn formula.

  • My pediatrician told me that some babies don't like the taste of certain formulas. I EP and supplement with formula. My LO hasn't turned down any kind of formula yet but his favorite seems to be similac advanced.
  • Doctors are great, but if she's only taken 5.5 oz and she usually has a lot more than that, I would go back to just BM and try again tomorrow. Keep offering her the formula mix first though.

  • I would not mix the formula and BM because if she doesn't drink it then you have to waste BM. My first child would not drink a mixed bottle but she would drink either BM or formula. You might want to try one formula bottle a day to supplement.

  • I have to supplement with Similac Alimentum. LO hates it. It's a constant struggle to get her to take it. I'm hoping at her appointment on Tuesday we can make a switch.

You say you add a scoop to bm.? Are you mixing dry formula with breastmilk? If so, that seems like it would throw off the balance of nutrients to liquid by a ton. I mix ready made formula with breastmilk.
My pedi has told me I "have" to do this. Needless to say, I am getting a new pedi for her. The final straw was when he said that the black mold in our house isn't a problem and that she won't show signs of mold allergy until she is 6 months old. Everything I have researched says it highly affects children under 6 months old. We just don't see eye to eye...

Thank you, everyone, for your replies! It has helped me realize I am not crazy and that it is indeed time for a new pedi.
  • You don't HAVE to do anything.  It's your kid.  If she's not eating because there's formula in the BM, then switch back to BM.  Some of the other posters had good ideas for supplementing.  Good luck!
  •  Have you tried adding water when you add the formula to the breastmilk? I make mixed bottles, but I put in the breastmilk, add the amount of water needed for the amount of formula, and then mix in the dry formula. (Since we don't have much breastmilk 'round these parts, we typically pour 2 oz of breastmilk into a bottle, add four ounces of warm water, then mix in two scoops of formula.)

  • I'm glad you're getting a new pedi. He sounds like an idiot. I agree with the others about adding water to the formula powder and about offering the BM and formula separately so you don't waste BM and so you can hopefully get her to eat something, even if she refuses the formula. Good luck.

  • When we started supplementing, I tried giving him mixed bottles and he didn't seem to like them.  I switched to formula only or bm only.

Good luck with finding a new pedi, I'm interested to hear what he/she has to say.  I also think adding a scoop of formula to breastmilk is kind of odd!  Is it so thick that the baby is having trouble sucking?

I've just began FF only, but when I was transitioning from BM to formula, I would give DS mixed bottles and he wasn't having it, so I would do a BM bottle, then a formula bottle, etc.  Went a lot better, and we had no issues with the transition.

I'm glad you're going to get a new pedi.  I can't imagine that it's "OK" for the baby to not be eating!  I'd rather LO be eating BM only and not gaining weight that way, than not eating a mix and starving!  Geez, what is that pedi thinking?!  Good luck OP!
