Morbid Question

Do you have a plan of action in place in the event a burglar, or anyone really murderer whatever, enters your home while you are home?

Here is some back story. I had a crazy dream yesterday that someone was in the house. I woke myself up from the dream in a panic and then couldnt stop that stupid feeling. I got up and walked around and no one was here but it was that icky feeling. And then I started thinking holy crap we really dont have a plan. Who protects the baby?

Then our neighbor, same busy body older guy that edges our lawn when cant take it anymore, comes over yesterday and says that there have been a few break ins this past week in the neighborhood. So now I'm really freaking out. We dont have a gun in the home. I dont want a gun in the home.

So my plan was... I need to put a club or bat or something in Emery's closet in her room. My H will deal with the burglar, I will run to her room with my phone, call 911 and lock the door and wait it out with her. He didnt like this plan as it put him in the immediate danger :P Oh well buddy you are 6ft 260 you get to deal with the bad guy.   Am I crazy? My sister thinks this is crazy.

  • We got rid of our baseball bat when we moved, not sure what we would do!  Thankfully, we're living on a gated campus, so I think the chance of being robbed/attacked by a stranger is very slim.

  • We have an alarm system. If anyone breaks in a door or window a siren goes off on the main floor and the police will be on their way (we live a block from the station). I believe this is a big enough deterrent and would scare anyone off. Also FWIW, if people want to rob you they often will do so when you are not home. Generally people who want your stuff don't want to deal with you as well and I find some comfort in that.

  • We actually had someone break into our house two years ago while we were asleep in bed. Thank god for our dog, he wouldn't stop barking, and then I saw shadows. MH went into the kitchen to get our marble rolling pin and looked around. His wallet had been stolen but I think the dog woke us up on time to stop him from getting anything else. After that MH got this, and it's really a big pain in the ass, but it does help me feel better. I'm also more hesitant to keep the dog from barking at things, since that's what helped to protect us.

  • We have a metal bat on our room. Bit probably won't do much if the guy has a gun. My husband want to get a shot gun without the amino but so he can make that sound haha. Dork! I told him now that il has the conceal and carry in place I would love to go to a shooting range and learn how to handle a gun. And if I learn and so does DH we will get a license and purchase that to protect. Until then its DH and metal bat against the perp and me and the kids hiding in their room calling 911. So planned out right haha.
Minus the gun part, it sounds like we have the same plan lol.

  • @Cpasley, that is a good idea! Double good because its handy if you lose power.

@adorabella and @briderx The logical part of me knows burglars want to come by when no one is home. Thats why my sister things I'm being a little nutty. It just dawned on me we never had a plan of this is your job, this is my job lol.

@Hibiscus also a good idea. Nosy rosy over here might get into it though.

Our alarm still works if the power is out (battery pack) and if the phone line gets cut (satellite link). And it didn't cost a million dollars. Can you tell I'm an alarm proponent? :)

How scary was that! I got nervous reading it! Thank god your dog woke you up.
It was terrifying, especially since I was pregnant at the time. I was so happy to have that dog at that time, and no matter how much of a little pain in the butt he is, I can forgive him almost anything just because of that. But after that I couldn't stay in that house anymore, I'm glad we were renting and could move after the lease was up.

  • @nesenotes Somewhere in a review MH read on it, it says it's handy whenever you come across something you don't want to in the dark. LOL And could definitely do some damage!

@adorebella When we buy our own house we will definitely have an alarm installed. We're in a small town, but it just emphasized to me that bad people are everywhere.

  • @andreab7412 I joke about my city being ghetto but the part we live in is a pretty safe super family friendly area. There is a High School at the end of the block so there are always people walking with strollers and dogs. All the neighbors are nosy as hell and its really annoying, but I guess it comes in handy with things like this.

  • Forgot to mention, when I was a child our apartment was broken into. It was after my parents' divorce and we were living in $hitty low rent apartments. Thankfully, my sister and I weren't home. My mom was in her bedroom and heard a crash. The idiot was trying to come in from above the apartment and fell through onto our fridge. The scary  part was, he bypassed all the stuff someone would want to steal and headed for my mom's bedroom. She met him in the hall with an iron and he ran off. He was arrested later because she knew who he was. He was the grown kid of someone who lived in the complex and had already been banned for following women around.

That's terrifying! Good for her protecting herself with what she had though!

  • @cpasley this is one of the reviews lol:

"You will want to tread lightly with this, as it definitely would generate enough striking force to fracture a skull, break bones. Be damn sure you're legally justified to use it, if you ever do use it. You can hurt someone with it. It's does cut a pretty intimidating profile. Walking around with one, it's almost as if you're carrying a bat. In some situations, this is OK. In other situations, where drawing attention to yourself isn't the desired outcome, you'd definitely want to leave this one home (in this regard, probably worth noting that given its weight, this is essentially a two handed club. I'm a large guy who has decent enough working strength- swinging a six D-cel flashlight with one hand is pretty slow going. Slow enough that you might risk your adversary grabbing on to it)"

    For $25 Done! Thanks!

  • On a side note I would not hesitate to shoot someone in my house uninvited. And I don't think that is a bad trait.
I wouldn't either, but I would need to get a smaller gun than my rifle before I'd feel comfortable keeping it near the bed. Right now my 270 is just too difficult to load quickly, so I want a handgun.

I dont think its a bad trait either. More power to all of you with firearms. I really dont trust my h with a gun. He is so effing clumsy its ridiculous! Plus neither of us were raised around guns at all. So the thought of having one is so foreign to me.

  • We actually talked about this the other night bc DH heard something funny downstairs. He keeps a pistol in his nightstand so he took that downstairs and investigated. Turns out it was nothing, probably just the cat, but it got us talking about what we would do of it was something bad. Basically, like you I'd let him take care of the bad guy while I get the baby and call 911, and he's fine with it. It's what he's trained for lol.

  • We have a home defense shotgun for my side of the bed and my husbands handgun on his side. I actually switched rooms around so ours is by the front door instead of Emma's (we're in a two bedroom apartment)
  • We have an alarm system that is on at night. I keep the doors locked during the day. I have a shotgun in my room. The shells are never next to it but hidden nearby. I also keep a few shells waaaay up high in LO's closet. I am very much prepared to use it if that were to ever happen. I would suggest an alarm system. My ideal plan would be to leave the house if possible, even out of a window, or barricade ourselves in a room and call the cops. The gun is my last resort.

  • Gun family here (it's also the law in our city to own one)
H and I are both great shots. I also have a case knife by my side of the bed. H would handle the intruder (he's got the added bonus of being a black belt) and I would go for Callen.

  • There's a gun hidden in every major room of our house, with the exception of Em's bedroom. Our plan is DH goes after the bad guy with the gun, I grab my handy dandy tomahawk and cell phone and go get Em. she and I jump out her window since it's on the first floor.

I like the way you think Cajun. We need to get together with our H's and have a shooting party! This was my most recent cluster and I'm pretty proud of it. I had never shot a gun until I got married 2 years ago.
that's awesome, I'm a lung and shoulder shot. I keep practicing but just can't get that good cluster!

It's not an actively enforced one, but is very well known. And home invasions are rather low in the city.

ETA: it's also a city law to own a rake. I guess in case you miss with the gun you can rake intruders to death.
