Trouble TTC

I have PCOS should I take Clomid?

Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17 when they did some blood work to see if I had thyroid problems. My doctor told me what I had, gave me a website to research it on, and put me on birth control. I am now 21 and my husband and I decided to try and get pregnant. I went off my birth control in January and started trying. I had one period in February for nine days and then nothing for five months! I have never in my life gone five months without a period! I went to my OBGYN today to discuss what has been going on. After telling her I would prefer to do things as natural as possible with eating right, exercising, and possibly taking Chasteberry Vitex, she told me that unless I was over weight those things probably wouldn't help me and that I'm young and that theres no hurry. She wrote me a prescription for Provera and Clomid, told me to call her if I have any problems and sent me on my merry way. I am totally lost! I have read so many mixed things about Clomid and wanted to go the natural way in all this but then again I really want a baby. And not having a doctor support/encourage the natural way is very discouraging. Has anyone been in this position? Any advice? Tips? Should I just go ahead and take what she prescribed?

  • My doctor said we would do all that testing after I did Clomid and if it failed. She seemed so sure that it would work and that everything is fine even though I've only had blood work done once 4 years ago. Starting to think I need to seek a second opinion.

  • Have you been on Metformin at all?  I would ABSOLUTELY get a second opinion before I took anything.  That was the first thing I was given when I was diagnosed w/PCOS.  To take Clomid you have to go through a slew of testing....at least I did, before they would even prescribe it to me.  At MINIMUM you have to go for an HSG and DH has to go for an SA to make sure those aren't the issue.  If there's another issue, the Clomid won't do anything except throw your body into a tizzy.  I was unresponsive to it as far as it making me O, but it did give me other not so fun side effects.  I think they need to at least try you on Metformin for a while to see if you respond to it.  I FINALLY did a couple weeks ago after 9 years and my RE prescribing the max dose.  I also agree that patience is a virtue, especially since you're so young.

My OB said the same thing to me. I pushed for an HSG and discovered blocked tubes. There is just no way to know unless you complete a full work up for BOTH you and your H. Either push for those tests or find a second opinion, sounds like you are leaning toward a second opinion. Best of luck to you!
