2nd Trimester

Wonderful, my dog's in heat.

Just in time for our Friday 800 mile drive to the in-laws, my dog is in heat. Too bad she was just in heat in July-August. The earliest spay appointment I could get at our local Anti-Cruelty when I called back at the end of September was January 16. Looks like it's doggie diapers for the next two-three weeks.

She stinks something AWFUL. If this is what male dogs like, thank goodness I'm not a male dog!

  • Ew, that really sucks :(

When Meeko was old enough that was the FIRST thing we did.  I wasn't having any illegitimate puppies or dog periods in my future!

  • Why didn't you just bring her to the vet after she went into heat the first time? Did you just get her in July? Getting a dog spayed really isn't that expensive at a regular vet vs a SPCA. Sorry, I work in rescue and get dogs fixed all the time. Don't understand why people wait, thats how puppies happen and the last thing anyone needs is more unwanted puppies.

  • That sucks, my dog went into heat the first time we had a spay appt set up and we had to change it because they won't spay during that time. She really didn't make much of a mess, just a few spots on the carpet.

We got her in August, and we got her from a rescue. When we first got her something was going on with her knee (she was hit by a car when she was living on the street), so we were trying to address that first. Additionally, the rescue was supposed to spay her but they wanted to wait to do it with their vet, who was in the middle of moving offices. It is $25 to get her spayed at Anti-Cruelty, and we're both students. The next cheapest option was PAWS, which was $175. The only male dogs she ever comes in contact with are during walks, when she is supervised by us. We figured we were safe until January! Guess not.

  • That's a bummer!  We were lucky; all the shelters and rescues in our area spay/neuter their animals before they will let them go home with their new families.  It doesn't really bump the adoption fee up much, either.  To be honest, I'm not sure how it's financially feasible, but it's sooo much easier for anyone adopting their pet.
  • hang in there!  my puppy went into heat two days before her spay appointment earlier this month!  its not that bad... they're pretty good about keeping themselves clean.  just be careful with her when you take her on walks!

thats so crazy!  my puppy went into heat two days before her appointment and i remember hearing the same thing from some women on here from their vets... the spay and neuter clinic still did it though... bloody vag and all!  and she was fine, i just had to keep her away from males because the hormone was still released and she would attract them and continue bleeding... but all was fine!  i guess each doc is different...

  • yikes, so sorry to hear that!  We got our female spayed before she even had the opportunity to go into heat, so I've never been through that.
  • you sure it's only $25?  does that it nclude IV pain meds?  a lot of cheap places it doesn't include any sedation and pain meds.... that is extra.  and really inhumane to do it without.

point is... if it's not included, you may find the costs are similar to a vet.

also, hate to point out the obivous, but if you can't afford to get your dog spayed for anything more than $25, how the hell will you afford a kid?

Please be careful walking her while she is in heat. Male dogs can be very aggressive when they are near an in-season female, and if you encounter one that is off-leash, you may not be able to separate them. I would keep the pee breaks quick until you can get her spayed.

You might want to know what you're talking about before you rip on people.  We live in a town that jacks the prices up on everything just because it can.  To get our Rott spayed its close to 300 dollars.  Over in South Dakota, its 150.  Same procedure, same way, horribly different price.

People do the best they can to raise a child and if she stated she's a student, that's a pretty big smack in the forehead as to why she's strapped for funds.

If you're so concerned about it, send her the money or tootle on over there and do it yourself!
