Breastfeeding: Juggling newborn and toddler? (xp bfing board)

Dd#2 is 6 days old now. I've been really lucky up to this point, my mother has been coming over and staying all day to help me out. She cleans and keeps my toddler (18 months) entertained (dh works nights and can't really help much during his work week). Dd#1 sleeps all night from 8 pm to 9 am usually, so nights are easy enough. We made these arrangements because I had tons of trouble bfing dd#1 and I was determined to make it work this time. So far, we've been doing much better already (most of that I attribute to a home birth instead of the not-mommy-friendly hospital), but of course, she's still very new and nursing can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on how much I have to fight to keep her awake, this kid sleeps hard! I'm really worried about how I'm going to take care of dd#1 on my own though! I have rather large breasts and haven't figured out how to nurse in the Moby yet, though dd#2 LOVES being worn in it.

Any tips/advice from moms that have BTDT?

  • I made it story-time during breastfeeding. I would bring a basket of books, sit on the couch, read and breastfeed. My oldest enjoyed the extra closeness of sitting right next to me. (At first there was an adjustment, but he quickly learned to expect and enjoy breastfeeding/story-time.) I also had the room full of toys and baby proofed for when he was done with reading.

  • I'm struggling with this now, too! DS2 wants to nurse almost constantly! I feel like a terrible Mommy to DS1 because I'm spending so much time nursing! Curious to see other suggestions!

  • Like PP mentioned story time. I keep books close by. I've also purchased Disney movies and downloaded toddler apps on my phone for DS. that way he'll just sit next to us entertained and snuggle while I'm nursing his brother.

We also have another living room in our basement that I've kinda turned into a overly childproofed playroom with lots of toys so we spend a lot of time there....

  • If your oldest is fine reading and playing quietly, story time is an excellent idea.
Otherwise, I suggest you baby proof the heck out of what shall be your BFing room and let your DD1 play while you nurse the baby.
And once you and DD2 get better at BFing, you will become more comfortable doing more "active" things with your toddler (for instance, I pushed DD2 on the swing while I was nursing Baby Boy the other day).
Just give yourself a little time and you will find your groove.
