NBR: Ready to Give Up

I have filled out over 40 job applications, had two interviews, and seen nothing but rejection letters. I am ready to give up on being a teacher. I have worked my butt off the past two years working on my masters ( I took classes fall, spring and summer for two years), interning, and working full time as a paraprofessional. I just feel like it is never going to pay off and I am going to spend my whole life working jobs I don't want just to pay off the debt from trying to reach my goal.

It doesn't help that we moved out of the district I had worked in for three years, so that my husband could get the job he wanted and I can't go back to being a paraprofessional because we won't make enough to cover daycare in this new area.

I've applied to literally every teaching job within an hour of my husbands job and nothing. Just nothing.

Thanks for listening.

  • DH is military and we moved from NOVA last year to east bumblefluck GA. I've applied to a whole bunch of things, had 2 interviews, but nothing. So I hear you and am mostly in the same boat. I wish it would work out for us. Hope something happens soon!

  • I SOMEWHAT know how you feel. DH went back to school for his masters in teaching a couple years ago and has never used his degree (although we'll be paying for it for 20 years). Its certainly disheartening and makes you second guess your self worth. But really, its really hard to become a teacher here unless you know someone or can afford to substitute for YEARS, even if you are a stellar specimen of teaching genius. Maybe you should broaden your search and think of things like corporate training, daycare (preschool class), non profits that offer community education and training etc. I know its not what you really want, but maybe the connections and experience will get you where you want to be eventually. Just keep swimming ;)

  • hugs! I find that while I am working part time trying to get a FT gig. Alot of employers are acting like I stopped working 3 years ago not just 9 mos and I work in Human Resources!

Thankfully my I am working with my old employer on a temporary basis and hope to find something soon!

  • Job hunting is terrible. I agree with pp in that you could look for a non profit that works with the schools. GL!

Just keep applying! I know the only reason I got my job was because my principal where I did my student teaching personally called another principal and told them to hire me. I'd filled out tons if applications prior and heard nothing. Once the school year starts there will be positions that open that need to be filled immediately, like if a teacher doesn't return. Try for those. Also, are you qualified to sub in that district? My principal has hired two of our subs into teaching positions. That might be a way in.

I can't sub because we wouldn't be able to afford daycare and I don't have anyone who would be able to watch him for a day on the spur of the moment. Otherwise I would do that. It is how I got my first paraprofessional job and I know it helps to get your foot in the door.

  • I completely, 100% understand how you feel.  I tried for 2 1/2 years, 90 something applications ranging from full time, to part time to just long-term subs.  I subbed for 2 years and got 6 interviews.  I went for secondary social studies and was told point blank by one of the principals at a school I tried for, "We have 264 applications...."  I got so upset with the process because I didn't know anyone and was told by another person they don't count subbing as experience.

Keep trying whatever you can--private schools, other types of teaching jobs, whatever others above mentioned.  I had to give up because my medical insurance ran out with my parents so I had to find another job.

Although looking back, for me personally it was the best thing that happened.  If I got a teaching job I wouldn't have wanted to give it up to be a SAHM....and that's truly what I wanted more than anything.  It was very easy leaving the job I did.
