Has anyone been told anything about cerebral palsy?? I was at the dr the other day and told of I delivered early we were at a higher risk. When is the cutoff for this risk not being so high? He put the fear into me now. Ugh. Would there be any signs on ultrasounds or no?? Can anyone shed some light? I'm a self admitted worry wart.
Re: cerebral palsy???
I wish your doctor would have explained this better to you. There is no reason to worry now. Cerebral Palsy is a condition that occurs because of circumstances at birth, mainly the baby being deprived of oxygen for too long of a period of time, which causes brain damage.
It is nothing that can be seen on ultrasound and nothing that even be determined before the first few years of a child's life when parents discover that speech, development, etc. is not within the milestone guidelines.
Please do not worry about this. It can occur in singleton full-term pregnancies. Yes, preterm babies are at a higher risk for some delays since organs have not had a chance to develop, but I know babies who were born at 22 weeks who are now perfectly healthy and happy.
Do not borrow trouble!
No an Amnio can not show CP and neither can u/s unless the baby was to have a stroke or seizure in utero and even then not 100% my daughter has it and there is no brain damage at all it was not dx'ed till she was 18 months.
This!
It is caused by trauma at, during, or shortly before birth. I have worked with kids who were full term but still ended up with CP. the risk is greater early on but never goes away. It can happen to anybody.
Sorry your dr scared you. Not sure why it was even mentioned.
What?! CP is due to oxygen deprivation during birth, nothing you can "see in an ultrasound." Nor would an amino detect it. Check your info before stating "fact" please.

Yes I agree. Prematurity does increase the risk of CP due to a very immature neurological system and/or brain hemorrhaging which occurs after birth. There is no completely "safe" gestational age. Each week the risk goes down, around 32-34 weeks is when statistically the risk is the same vs. a full term baby. There is not really anyway to predict this when you are still pregnant. If you are at a high risk for delivery, receiving a series of steroid injections not only helps mature lungs but also helps protect the brain of a premature baby. Also magnesium given before birth can help protect the babies brains.
To the other OP, your info sounds slightly ridiculous. Never have I heard that Irish descent or red hair increases the risk...
