FAILED 1 hour GD test - any tips???

So I found out that my blood sugar was at 170 (range of 70-130)...I'll be going back Monday morning to do my 3 hour test.

My 1 hour test was in the afternoon so I did eat though I did not have any juice or carbs. I did have blueberries the morning of the test (since they are supposed to be lower in sugar?) and some pita bread the night before. I was told not to fast so I had chicken salads and eggs for my other meals.

The lab technician said that it won't really matter what I eat from now till when I start fasting for my 3 hour test but I can't help but wonder that maybe watching my sugar and carbs this weekend will help.. She also said that many of the 1 hour test results are elevated to begin with and the 3 hour is the one that matters the most.

For those of you that have had your GD tests (1 and 3 hour) and have passed or failed, have you found that your diet prior to the tests made a difference?

Thanks!

  • I have heard that many people that fail the 1 hour pass the 3 hour.  I would eat the way you normally do because if you have GD you don't want to "trick" the test.  I don't know if you even could but you would rather have the docs watch things closer if you in fact have it.
    Good luck though!

Thanks! That's a good point. I don't eat too badly to begin with (occasional ice cream) but I'm wondering if maybe I'm eating too many high sugar fruits (I love mango!) and carbs...hmmmm...

so I have heard that fruits can be an issue with GD's.  I had a friend that never passed her test but it a lot of the time because she ate a lot of fruits!?  Obviously it could be anything and I am no doctor.  Hopefully the 3 hour test you will have good news!!

My OB has a recommended diet for the 3 hour test. It can be found here https://www.alliance-obgyn.com/PatientEducation/PregnancyInformation.aspx sorry its not clicky im mobile

    Thanks!

  • I failed my one hour with DS1. But they pricked my finger, and I don't think that's an accurate read. I was eating a lot of carbs, a lot of cereal, a lot of sweet potatoes. I cut all of that out and I passed my three hour. But it was a blood test. My first reading was high, but the last two averaged out.

With my 1 hour they took 2 small vials of blood from my arm. I thought it was going to be a small sample from my finger.

I'm going to scale back on the high sugar fruits, carbs (unless they're whole grain), and extra sweets this weekend to see if it helps me on Monday. It wouldn't hurt to do it anyway :). I eat lots of salads but I realize I have eaten lots of French fries because I crave burgers!
  • Your diet will make no difference in whether you have GD or not as a PP said, you don't want to "trick" the test if you in fact have it.  You may have GD simply because your uterus is pressing up against your pancreas and diet won't change that.

As someone who's had GD before, yes, it's kind of a pain (I had to prick my finger 4 times a day and had to write down everything I ate and my numbers and send them to my nutritionist once a week) and I missed certain foods, but it is manageable and not the end of the world.  Once you give birth you can go carb crazy and it tastes so good!

  • Just wanted to jump in and add what I've been told. With DS1 I failed the 1hr (knew it would happen as I am on Metformin to control my sugars when I'm not preggers) so I took the splendid 3hr test 3x! So the way that it was explained to me is that the levels they are looking at is a measurement over a past period of time, so what you may have eaten for breakfast or even lunch 2days ago isn't going to cause you to fail. It's more of a long range thing. I could be wrong but this is my understanding. Oh and I never failed any of the long tests and I just had my 1hr screening with DS2 and passed that one too!
  • I failed the 1st one - was 131 and the 3 hour I was fine. My doctor also said a lot of people fail the 1 hour test. good luck!

  • I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour in my last pregnancy, it is actually fairly common.

I was told to have a normal diet until the fasting period, which is what I did.
