Stereotypically, the male character, who may be romantically involved with another character canonically, falls madly in love with the Mary Sue protagonist (who is just the Author in thin disguise) and they live happily ever after.
The only reason that didn't happen, LD, is because there was real life to contend with.
The story was set during a breakup b/t Benny and his former girlfriend in 2004. They got back together and didn't breakup for good until 2011.
