Harmony results with twins?

Hi all,

I received my Harmony results back and was low risk (1:10,000) for all the trisomies.  They then told me when I asked that the lab said it could not do gender/sex chromosome testing on twins?  My genetics counselor said it was fine and that's why we elected to do it.  Now i'm really disappointed!  After googling it seems like I'm getting a mixed result. Some people say they have gotten gender results and some say they aren't able to do it with multiples.  Anyone here have any experience with the test?  Thank you!

Re: Harmony results with twins?

  • Hmm - I'm not much help because a couple of months ago when we were ordering that testing and making inquiries, Harmony wouldn't do the testing for multiple pregnancies at all (even for identical twins).  MaterniT21 was the only one at that point.  We asked not to be told the sex, but I think it is in our file.

  • It is my understanding that the Harmony and Mat21 test can tell you if a Y chromosome is detected since as females we wouldn't have it in us unless we were carrying a male. If it is, you are having at least one boy. If no Y chromosome is detected, you are having girls.

I had one done and a Y chromosome was detected so we waited until our anatomy scan to find out if they were boy/boy or boy/girl. Just had our appointment this morning and they are officially boy/girl twins!
    BFP #1 on 12/15/11 but missed m/c with d&c on 2/1/12.
BFP #2 on 5/1/13 = boy/girl TWINS with EDD of 1/3/14 but expected no later than 12/20/13.
  • thanks for the response.  we even had the discussion with the counselor about them being identical and it not being a problem.  i'm just disappointed we were told one thing by someone who's supposed to have been an expert with this.  my insurance would only cover harmony, not mat21.

This is true (not just for the sex chromosomes, but for any other trisomy issues), but in our case we knew we were having identical twins for 100% certain, so a Y chromosome would have meant two boys for us.

  • I just looked on Harmony's website, and the sex chromosome testing is an optional add-on, so I would guess that someone forgot to request that (or the lab mistakenly didn't test for it, if requested).
