With all the clothes shopping talk going on,

I just have to ask. Have any of you ever looked in a thrift shop in your area? I went yesterday on the hunt for some cheap picture frames to repurpose and wandered into the baby section and I was shocked at the amount of cute, clean, baby/toddler clothes they had! I bought a few button ups for K for when he starts day care and they cost about $1.50-$3 a piece. One was Janie and Jack for $3! Janie and Jack stuff is still like $12 at our local consignment store that I usually hit up.

I probably would have turned my nose up at the idea of putting my baby in thrift store stuff at one point, but I'm tellin ya, it was awesome finding such cheap, nice stuff! Just throwing this out there...

Most of Elena's stuff comes from thrift/consignment stores...I'm assuming they're the same thing. The ones in my area are picky about what they take in terms of brand and style, so its good stuff.

  • @hijoi That's gross. Usually consignment stores are a little pricier and higher quality because people don't donate the items, but sell them for profit.

@stokedwifey I went to Vapor on 280 near Lee Branch. They had tons of toddler shirts. Not as much as Weepeats, but much cheaper. I even got my future niece and outfit there with tags still on it for $4!

I've only been there once and looked for house stuff.  It was still pretty pricey, so I never thought to look for clothes.  I need to try again!

I'm with @hijoi on this one. Most thrift stores here are dirty!! Like bring home bed bugs nasty. Consignment stores aren't bad for toys but clothes are expensive.

  • 99% of my son's clothes I bought used, are hand-me-downs, or were gifted. I don't spend any money on new clothes unless it is something I can't live with and it is on sale.

I mostly buy my son's clothes at consignment sales.  I'm lucky enough to have 2 different options in my area, one that is a yard sale type where you buy from other parents who set up booths, or a large consignment sale where one company takes in consigned stuff and liquidate it all in one weekend.

I find that Once Upon a Child is very expensive in comparison with consignment sales.

I also recently bought 4 pairs of nearly new shoes from an ebay seller for $5 each.

We also have a great thrift store called "2nd Avenue" and it is the best thrift store since it is clean and organized. Its is hit or miss though.  Sunday and Mondays are 1/2 off days since they get a new shipment on tuesday.

If anyone is in the Maryland area and wants to know about any of these, message me.

  • When I lived in Washington, we had a great Goodwill that had designer duds for cheap. I bought the majority of my maternity wardrobe there. Gap Maternity maxis for $3! I still get a little gleeful when I see that dress in my closet. Such a good deal.

The Goodwill by me here in Florida stinks, but our Once Upon a Child is pretty nice. I've bought most of Keira's stuff at a twice-yearly consignment sale we have in Orlando called Cradle to College. Always really nice stuff and great prices. Plus, if you decide to consign with them, you get 70% back which is a lot higher than if you go with a private store.

  • We have a couple of really nice ones that are very clean and choosy about what they take. One is on the super fancy side of town with the Donna Karen, Burberry, etc... Brands and the other is normal stuff...Gap, Carters, etc, both are strictly for children though.

All the time!! We have quite a few thrift stores around us and we're lucky that they are really clean and nice! I've been to some further away that were nasty so I'll never go back to those. I find baby gap and gymboree stuff there all the time, and sometimes I find stuff brand new with the tags still on!
