Sleep transition questions

DS is now 15 weeks old (9 adjusted) and is a great sleeper so far.  I'm hoping to keep it that way as I transition him and am looking for advice.  He started out sleeping in a bassinet by my bed and about a month ago, transitioned into sleeping in his room.  The top of our bassinet lifts out so he's been sleeping in that inside his crib so he feels more cozy.  He's also swaddled for naps and nighttime.  He's growing out of the bassinet (hard to believe my preemie's getting so big!) and sometimes gets out of his swaddle, so I think our days are numbered on both of these.

I can't decide if it's best to transition him all at once to just sleeping unswaddled in his crib or if I should do one at a time.  Is it easing him from one situation to another or is it prolonging the agony?  If one at a time, any recommendations as to which one to do first?

Thanks!

I would probably continue to swaddle and transition to crib only. DD had no issues going from bassinet to crib. She's still being swaddled, but isn't quite 10 weeks yet.
    3 ectopic pregnancies (EDD's 1/30/12-tube removed, 6/2/12-methotrexate and 10/2/12-methotrexate)
IVF and Natural FET resulted in BFN's and a hole in our wallets
Natural BFP #4 on 9/7/12 gave us our miracle on 5/18/13

Did she go to crib just for naps at first or did you do naps & nighttime all at once?

This. We just transitioned DD to her crib from her co sleeper bassinet and it was a smooth transition with her still being swaddled. Her crib is in our room so the next step will be to transition out of the swaddle and then finally to her own room. How big is your little guy now?
That's great that she did so well transitioning.  This is very encouraging.

Hard to believe, but my little guy is 14 lbs already!  At his last pedi appt he was in the 23rd percentile for term babies his age.  We've been working incredibly, incredibly hard and I'm so proud that it's paying off!  How's DD doing?

DD is doing great :) Just got her 2 month shots and she is 11.5 pounds and nearly 24 in long! ETA: I tried to break up the quote tree and failed. Still trying to figure out this new format.

Way to go you two! Those shots can be rough.  It was more traumatizing for my husband and me than for him but it's still no fun.

Did she go to crib just for naps at first or did you do naps & nighttime all at once? She did daytime naps there and that night she slept in her crib.

  • My LO slept just like yours. I tried to transition him to the crib for both nights and naps and it was a disaster! I had a doctors appointment right after that and he said to not do both at the same time. We've started him sleeping in there swaddled at night and its going really well. LO still sleeps in his bassinet for naps.

Thanks for all this input.  I decided to give it a try so for his last nap, I swaddled him and put him in the crib without the bassinet.  He stayed awake a lot longer than usual but was quiet and eventually fell asleep after 30 minutes.  He woke up just 30 minutes later and wouldn't get lulled back to sleep.  I got him up but he fell asleep almost immediately while BF.  I did my best to rouse him but eventually decided that he needed to go back down.  I reswaddled him, put him down and am still watching him on the monitor 30 minutes later, quiet but awake still..

@JulieK79, I'm intrigued that your doctor recommended just doing nights at first.  It makes sense since it'd be darker and less visual stimulation but I'm afraid of messing with his nights that seem to work so well.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

  • @krwact Yep, doctor said to start with nights. He gives all of his new patients his bedtime routine talk at the 2 month appointment. My LO now goes to sleep easily and quickly at night. If what your doing at night works, I wouldn't mess with it. He said I can keep doing whatever I am for naps until the next 4 month appointment. Naps are what we are now having trouble with though. I swear he has a 45 minute internal alarm clock!
