Ashkenazi Jews

I read the earlier posts regarding genetic diseases potentially associated with being Askenazi Jewish but the threads were unclear about some things and are likely dead now. I am half Jewish (raised Jewish but genetically half) and this was not something they asked about or something I mentioned at my initial OB visit. I got screened as a carrier for CF (negative) but nothing else because again, I was unaware. My husband is not Jewish, he's Hispanic, and we are meeting with a genetic counselor on Tuesday (scheduled an appointment today after the midwife said I was really low risk but she likes the counselor and thought it wouldn't hurt). On the one hand, I can write it off and say even if we were both carriers it's a 25% chance of Tay Sachs, and the chances of us both being carriers are very low. On the other hand, after a miscarriage in February, it's easy to get worked up about every new level of thing that could possibly be wrong. Anyone have any experience with this? Any helpful words? I'm hoping the counselor just reassures us that no testing would be necessary because of how low the risk seems. And at 19 weeks pregnant, that's all the hope I have to hang on to. I feel like a failure for not doing this earlier.

Re: Ashkenazi Jews

  • No experience, but in order to be a risk you would both have to have Jewish ancestory. At least that is my understanding from what I've read. Definitely create a list of questions and write them down. I just wanted to leave a note to tell you that that sounds like a tough thing to be facing and I hope you get good news from the genetic counselor.

  • No experience here either, but like Prim said I don't see how your husband could be a carrier if he is Hispanic. It sounds like your chances of him being a carrier would be slim to none. I hope you get the reassurance you need from the genetic counselor soon; those are scary issues to have to be concerned about.
  • I have experience with this.  I got tested for everything jewish related before I got pregnant.  It's only an issue if both you and your husband are carriers.  If only one of you is a carrier of the genes, then your child won't have the disorder.  When I was about 14 weeks into my last pregnancy my Dr. realized that my previous OB (switched when I got pregnant so I had an OBGYN) had missed a few tests.  I freaked out.  Luckily, they all came back negative.

With you only being 50% and your husband not being jewish at all, I don't think you need to be too concerned.

  • Thanks guys, I really appreciate the reassurance that I wasn't the only one coming to these conclusions. We just had our anatomy scan on Tuesday and after 2 days of being elated that we're having a little girl, I start to worry about her again. Thanks for the kind words.
