Re: 13 1/2 Months-NOT walking

  • Mine didn't walk until 14 months and up to 18 months is considered normal. My LO didn't even practice, just one day he let go of the couch and never looked back.

Same here...my DS took off one day at 14 months. He then went from walking to full blown running. Savor these calm days but also know things are about to also get more fun!

  • My DD didn't walk until 15.5 months. And she didn't just take off like other ppl have said. I felt like it was such a slow process. Now at 16.5 months, I would say she's a good walker but still seems unsteady at times. I'm pregnant too so I know how you feel!

  • My 13 month old is not walking yet either.  He is cruising furniture and pulling up well, has been for almost 2 months now.  But he refuses to take that step alone yet.  I figure it will come soon.  Good luck!  When they start walking we'll probably wish they still crawled.  :-)

  • No worries. My DD didn't walk until she was 16 months old. However, she was very sure footed from the get-go...not a lot of falling. And within a month she was RUNNING! Now most of our day is spent walking and running around. They do it when they feel confident. I don't know if your child is interested in it at all, but my DD liked to push around a kid's shopping cart. We put objects all around the room and she liked to collect them and put them in the cart. Don't stress out if you child isn't interested in that yet though. My DD only did this JUST before she started walking. Before that she had absolutely NO interest in walking. The doctor told me that she was a "proficient" crawler and that is why she had no interest in walking. Walking slowed her down.

I know it is hard not to worry, but try not to. Your child when walk when he or she is ready.

  • G didn't start to walk until almost 15 months. He's always been a more vocal kid and less physical.

  • DS didn't walk until 18 months, but now he's off and running!  I guess he had lots of practice cruising for 9 months so he just needed the confidence to let go.  His Dr. was not worried about it in the least since he's hitting all of his other milestones on time or early.

  • DS started walking at 14.5 months. He was crawling one day then took some steps the next and is now so fast! I know of some children who didn't walk until 18 months and even a little later and they now have NO trouble keeping up with kids their age. I would not worry because every baby is different and things can change quickly at this age! :)

  • I know it's hard because they do get heavy but once they start walking it doesn't really get much better. You still have to carry them a ton but now you also get to chase them around. Enjoy this time, I'm sure walking is just around the corner.

My nephew walked at 16 months. He was not the least bit interested but my parents came to visit and brought with them a moon walker and since he was older and stronger, it only took 1 week of practice and he was walking. If you are feeling ready, then you might want to try one of those.

  • Yep, DD didn't walk until 16 months and there were no concerns.  Hang in there.  Your ticker doesn't say how far along you are, but even now at 18 months, DD needs to be carried a lot.  Maybe get your stroller out more?

  • My daughter walks on her knees.  And she has taken a couple of steps.  But she is more comfortable with crawling and walking on her knees.  She is getting more confident with standing when I take pictures of her.  I know that she will get there on her own.  And I expect her to be able to walk on her own by the end of summer.  Have fun with this time!  I am taking a lot of fun pictures of her just being her own fun self.

  • Try not to freak out! LO will get there. True story, DD just turned 20 months today and has been walking for 5 weeks, and only took her first steps EVER another 4 before that! If you get to the point where you are seriously freaked though, call your pedi :)

Im in the same boat....Im due with #2 in Sept and my son just started full blown walking and like others he didn't really do any baby steps just stood up and about two weeks later totally walking.  So he was 15 months when I would call him an offical walker.  HOWEVER, even though he is walking its not like he is totally stable and walking like in a store.  Hate to break it to you but you will still be carrying him. :)

  • My DD walked right at 16m. She took her first steps one day, and the next day she was walking full time-no more crawling. She had a cautious personality, even back then! In everything she tries even now, she likes to know she can do something before she tries it.

  • At 16 months my DS didnt look like he was anywhere near walking. We had been working with him so much and he was very unstable. One Saturday afternoon he was on the floor playing and looked over at me, stood up, and walked to the other side of the room. He never lost eye contact with me. It was like he was telling me 'I could have done it a long time ago, I just didnt want to.'

  • I'm more of a lurker here.  My DS turns 16 months tomorrow (the 30th).  He can cruise and just started standing up without holding onto anything, but can't walk without holding onto anything.  Pedi isn't concerned.
  • my sweetie isn't walking either, but I figure it comes with time since she can move anywhere so long as she has one hand on something. (not exactly walking but she gets there, she's just a little unsure of her legs still so she's wobbly)
  • You've gotten a lot of responses and I can agree that some just walk late!  My son just started at almost 17 months but now he is running EVERYWHERE!
