Toys & Cleaning up

Do your LO's clean up after they play with their toys?

I know our LO's are barely turning 2 but Logan is a total dump my toys everywhere and then go play with non toy items. Today DH said Babe let's try and take his toys away and see how he does once we return them. I agreed but I feel so bad but then again maybe this is a good thing. Thoughts?

Re: Toys & Cleaning up

  • sometimes DD2 will clean up and she sings the clean up song from daycare. I can take no credit in her picking up - that's all daycare right there.

  • I just started to have her help clean up before we go outside. She really likes to go out so it's a good motivator and she usually helps.
  • He does a better job helping to clean up than his brother. I think the biggest thing for us is to have a motivator. "If we don't clean up then we can't go to our friends house." Works really well.

Sometimes giving him specific toys to pick up works as well. For example I might say: "pick up the green train, please." Once the green train is picked up I give him a new object.

  • DD cleans up at DC and at Grams' house. But not at home. If I tell her to clean up her toys she says "NO!" and runs away giggling. If I go get her and bring her back and tell her she can't do anything else until we pick up toys she cries and throws herself on the floor.

How long do the terrible twos last?

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes we do the let's clean up and hand him things to put away or mention a color of the item. Its either a hit or miss (usually a miss) One thing I guess we should be happy is he is pretty good on cleaning up at his gym class.

Oye I guess we just keep doing what we are doing and hopefully soon he will get the hang of it. Thanks :)

  • We have certain toys that get cleaned up every single time they come out, mainly her Duplo blocks and crayons/drawing supplies.  She has gotten to the point that when she is done playing with them she starts putting them away - most of the time.  It has become routine.

For everything else, we do what PPs mentioned - very specific clean-up directions combined with some motivation.  If she is begging to go outside, we encourage she clean up inside toys first, that always gets her to help!

  • We don't usually make her, but if she has dumped out all her blocks or the front room is particularly messy the we will. we tell her it's time to clean up and try to praise her/ make it as fun as possible.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much now. Just keep doing what you're doing and I bet he'll eventually get it.
