With DD#1, my water broke on a Friday at 8:00pm, contractions began at 2:00am and she had arrived by 7:30. I know labor can go even faster than that but my contractions were never gradual. I had a few 10 min apart, a few 4 min. apart, and the rest were all on top of each other....crazy pain.
With DH out of the country when DD#2 is due, I am terrified labor could start with no warning and I'd be in the same debilitating pain in a flash. I'm quite stressed out about getting child care for DD quickly, getting myself to the hospital quick enough etc. even though I have a plan in place and plenty of people willing to help... I still stress that people won't hear their phone or forget to turn it on at night knowing I could call..... I am probably being a little irrational??
Re: If your first labor was fast....how was the second?

Mine was actually a few hours longer but my OB had guessed it would be due to DD3 being bigger. But I had several of the same concerns you did as my due date approached.
With DD1 I woke up cramping at 7am, water broke in the shower around 8:30 and she was out at 10:34am. She was 6lbs, 6oz and 12 days early. (DD2 was a c/s due to breech)
For DD3 my water broke at 8:30pm, contractions started about 9:15 and she was born at 2:07am. She was 8lbs, 8oz and 2 days early.

PgAL/PAL Welcome
First labor I went from 1cm to 10 and pushing in about 2 hours.
Second labor I went from 1cm (checked at hospital but was sent home due to lack of progress) to 10cm when checked at drs office about an hour and had to be rushed to hospital in an ambulance and had no time for an epidural
With both I had about 12 hours of irregular, non painful contractions before the real labor started.
With my first I was in labor all day (I started having minor back contractions before going to bed the night before but I didn't really know they were contractions). Honestly though my contractions were never timetable. I labored at home all day, my water broke at about 5:30pm, I got to the hospital about 7:30/8 and DS was born at 9:30pm. I arrived at the hospital at 10cm.
With this one, I started having contractions in the early evening, pretty spaced out, like 10 minutes or so apart. They continued getting gradually closer all night (so I didn't really sleep). We got to the hospital at about 7/7:30am and I was at 3cm, my water broke on its own at 8:30, and DS was born at 10:19.
With both my contractions weren't awful until my water broke. Then both times it got painful and went really quickly.
With my DD my water broke at 2:40am. Contractions began within the hour. Went to the hospital around 3:45am and she was born at 3:10pm. So total labor was 12.5 hours.
With DS my water broke at 3:02am. Contractions began almost immediately. Waited for FIL to get to our place to watch DD. And he was born at 5:56am. Second time around labor was just under 3 hours.
"You're gonna miss this You're gonna want this back You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast..."
DS labor was 12 hours. Went into labor naturally with contractions at home that steadily progressed in intensity and duration until I had him. Dr broke my water at 10 cm in hospital.
DD labor was 6 hours with contractions that came on intense and went from 5 min to 1.5-2 within an hour. I labored much less at home as I was in pain almost immediately.
We live out of state from all family but our plan was always to have my dad come down to watch DS. He arrived into town at 8 pm and I went into labor that night around midnight -10 days early. We had two different friends as backup in case I went before my dad was here. They were both moms so knew it could happen any time of day and to keep the phone close. We also had our neighbor as last backup that gave us the ok to knock on the door at any hour if we got desperate. It's definitely added stress when you already have a little one at home. I'd just have a couple people on standby and a friendly reminder to keep their phones close never hurts
