13 month old eats a lot

Hi all

My 13 month old son wants to eat constantly.  Or so it seems.  When he's home or at his Grandmothers.  We work full time so he's at home on the weekends, daycare 3 days a week and Grandma's two days a week.  He will express his desire for food anywhere from 1-3 hours after his last meal.  And he eats well too, he doesn't typically take a couple of bites and push the rest away.  This has been going on for at least 7 days now.  He's tall, 86th percentile for height and 60th percentile for weight.

Has anyone else encountered this?  Should I be concerned that he's eating out of habit or could he be really that hungry?

  • We feed him as well when he's hungry.  It's always nice to hear someone else is in the same situation.  Thanks for the reply!

  • DD, now 14 months, eats ALL. THE. TIME.  I think she'd be quite happy if we just left the fridge open for her.  She eats really well at mealtimes, has 2 sit-down snacks a day (as I don't like getting banana in my rug), and then will craze on puffs in between.  We only offer food if she's asking or is super cranky, which she gets when she's hungry.  She's at the top of the charts both weight and height, so she's proportional, just has a fast metabolism.  Sometimes, during a growth spurt, she'll want more.  I wouldn't worry.

  • DD is 14months and she also eats a lot!  We allow her to eat as much as she wants at meal times and if she is cranky we know she needs a snack.

However, I will be a dissenting voice about them eating out of habit. We have my parents living with us and my DH works long hours and has a schedule that doesn't always match up to meal times. Needless to say with four grown adults in the house food is eaten throughout the day (not just meal times) and for DD it HAS become habit for her to go up to ANYONE who is eating and request/demand some of what they have. Even if this is within minutes of her telling us she was done eating her own food.

In these situations I have often resitricted her from getting more. Mostly because I know she is not truly hungry, and sometimes because the food she is requesting is not particularly healthy for her.

  • My DS eats all the time as well. He is in the 90th percentile for height and 70th for weight so I'm not concerned. I am more afraid of how much he is going to be eating when he is a teenager if he is eating this much now! ;)

Some meals my 14mo DD will eat more than my 2.5yo DS.  She knows how to sign and ask for food and milk and we let her eat when she is hungry but I do always make her sit at the table (or if we're playing out back she sits at a little picnic table).  I don't want to deal with her just walking around with food all day.  DS has the same rules.
She usually eats breakfast at 7:30, snack at 9:30/10, lunch at 12, snack at 3, dinner at 6 and she nurses at 7am&7pm.  We try to avoid empty foods (like puffs, cheerios, goldfish) except maybe 1 snack per day.

ETA - is he teething?  DD shoves her mouth full when she is teething - especially lately with the molars.  Maybe try offering a teething ring or mesh feeder with ice if you think that's why.

  • Sounds normal. At a year old DD was eating nearly as much as I did. A typical breakfast consisted of 4 oz yogurt, an egg, toast and a whole piece of fruit. Plus she would want a snack 2 hours later.  I talked to her Dr about it and she said that at that age kids only eat when they are hungry. As long as I was feeding healthy things, it was fine to let her eat as much as she wanted.

  • Mine is 16 months and eats a ton. He eats till he pops. I can't complain because it could be worse to have a picky eater. I just think they are hungry for snacks etc because they are running around burning off the calories.

  • My daughter eats every 2 hours and sometimes they're actually pretty decent sized meals while other times she just wants a handful of puffs or a few pieces of fruit. I'd say it's just your LO growing and needing more calories.
