XP: Why would my doctor recommend amnio?

I also posted this in the Nov '13 board.

I got a call today from my ultrasound technician that I needed to schedule a growth scan and while I was at it did I want to get amniocentesis because it was recommended in my chart. I was taken a back because prior to this I've had no problems. I'm 30. My Maternit21 came back with low risk for all trisonomy disorders, my AFP came back negative, and nothing was said to me at my NT or AS scan about abnormalities. I asked to speak with a doctor and no one called me back tonight. I'm really upset and googling is getting me nowhere except confused. Fortunately, I have a doctor appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning, but in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas?

Re: XP: Why would my doctor recommend amnio?

  • I should actually clarify that I spoke with the receptionist at the ultrasound place, not even a tech.

  • It could be so many things. And that's if you even actually need one. Whatever you do, don't google (easier said than done) but tomorrow will be here before you know it.

  • It could be nothing. The MFM practice told me I could have one if I wanted it at 20 weeks, but honestly the risks were so low and my baby was going to be monitored so closely due to GD anyway, that I declined.

The doctor agreed that it was unnecessary, but they just like to give the option and "leave nothing to chance".

  • They told me I have 2 soft markers for downs - a bright spot on the heart and brain, but said because my Martin21 test came back low risk and I am young, they're not worried, which is why they didn't call me and the receptionist shouldn't have tried to schedule amnio. That being said, they're sending me for an echocardiogram for piece of mind. I'm scared, but hopeful.
