High-Risk Pregnancy

GD and a natural birth?

So I've been reading a lot about people having to get induced early due to GD... And I'm wondering if anyone has any information or experiences with this.

I am really really hoping for a natural medfree birth, I know everyone's labour experience is different and there are so many factors but I'm just curious if GD will really have an impact on this plan?

Re: GD and a natural birth?

  • This is my first rodeo with pregnancy and with GD, so take that FWIW, but from what I understand a lot of it depends on how well controlled your blood sugar levels are.

  • This is my second pregnancy. No experience with GD the first time around, but was diagnosed this time around. Spoke with my doctor about concerns about taking the baby too early, and being forced into an RCS instead of attempting a VBAC, and all she said is, unless there are any further complications, they like to wait until 39 weeks, but they will not let one go past their due date. I would speak with your doctor about your concerns and see what she has to offer in return!

  • No one can force an induction on you. It is not about "letting" someone do anything with their own body. It is about finding the right care provider for your comfort level and specific medical circumstances. I would run far away from any provider that treated all GD patients the same regardless of their sugar control, growth scans, meds, and BPPs.

To answer the op, I had gd with my first. I took Metformin for pcos but was otherwise diet controlled. I was seen by midwives in a free standing birth center with extra monitoring with a perinatologist. There was no talk of induction and I had my son spontaneously at 41w1d, the average for a first gestation. Both of us had no health issues.

I have GD again, am on Glyburide for fasting numbers that are now well controlled, and I was in the birth center with midwives until we recently moved internationally. There aren't midwives where I am now, so I see a natural birth friendly ob, peri and doula. We are comfortable going intervention free until 41w before we discuss induction. I am 38 yrs old and have had borderline low fluid since moving here, so iI'm not as comfortable waiting until 42w like with my first. I get weekly BPPs and baby and I are doing well at 38w5d. I would suggest discussing your plans with your care provider to make sure you are on the same page and doing independent research so that you can make an informed decision that is specific to your health conditions. Best wishes.
  • FTM, and I am being induced at 39 weeks due to GD. I don't plan on going med-free, but my own mother had to be induced for all four of us. She didn't have complications, we just all went over 42 weeks. My poor mother!

Anyway, she never used epidural or meds. She was more afraid of drugs and needles than she was of the pain. So, you can be induced and still not get meds. It's certainly possible.

  • I would say it depends on how big baby is. When I was first diagnosed with GD I had an ultrasound to take baby's measurements and he is running a bit small so my doctor said that unless he has a major growth spurt we would not induce early. I'm getting another scan at 37 weeks to see how big he is and then go from there. But I'm assuming if your baby is really large and most likely wouldn't be able to fit through your pelvis, then yes, they will most likely induce you early to prevent that.
