Breast milk gone bad

Disclaimer: the point of this post is solely because I need to complain. Well, and maybe if any of you have had this happen you can commiserate. Or if you have any insight, let me hear it!

I had to toss EIGHT 5 oz bottles this morning because the milk had gone bad. Three from the fridge that I had just pumped on Friday and 5 from the freezer. They hadn't been in there longer than 3 months! Normally my milk in the fridge is good for at least 5 days. And I've never noticed my freezer stash going sour that quickly. I asked DH to check the temps of the freezer/ fridge and they were normal. We barely even opened the fridge over the weekend because we mostly ate out. Dh swears he didn't leave the doors opened. Consider me baffled...and pissed. If this had happened a few months ago I would have been hysterical. I have a decent freezer stash and pump enough each day now but still, this sucks!!

  • That sucks, I'm sorry. We had that happen to a freezer bag when we were on vacation. I would definitely cry if it were me.

Thanks for joining me in my pity party! Whoever said "don't cry over spilled milk" obviously never breastfed/pumped.

  • It does suck. I had to toss 12 oz one Monday, and I've had to toss a lot of other random bags/bottles. It's never a good feeling.

It's liquid gold, I still get upset if I serve LJ more than enough in a bottle than he will drink. I feel crappy tossing 1oz per bottle feeding. :(

  • We went out Saturday and I had packed two bottles. We were only gone 3 hours, but it was so hot that when I came home and looked at the bottles they were clumpy and smelled weird. Down the drain. Thankful that she wasn't hungry while we were out!

Next time I take a cooler with us.

I would cry, too.  My parents watched LO for the day last Sunday and she wouldn't drink anything.  10oz down the drain.  Then, another 5oz. last Thursday when I was out & DH was with her.

I'm having the hardest time building up my freezer stash for school, so it's making me even more upset bc not only am I wasting milk, I can't replace it bc instead of pumping, I have to feed her.

But..back to you...that really sucks, hope it doesn't happen again!

Boo! That does stink that you're having a hard time building your stash. Check out www.workandpump.com ... good information!

my friend who Ebf says hat, so true! Before when I was ep, I lost several bags an omg no words describe that feeling. I wonder why your milk keeps going bad, wth?? Sorry AM

Thanks! I have no clue what it can be! Seriously is one of the worst feelings because you work so hard for it AND it has to do with feeding your child so that's kind of a big deal.

BTW- your new sig picture is freakin' adorable!!!

I took a video of them sharing cheerios this morning.  I handed one to Sean.  One to Rondo.  one to Sean, one to Rondo.  They would each watch each other intently as the other had their snack.  It was so cute.

     Awww, presh!!

  • I would keep an eye on the fridge.  This started happening to us.  LO wouldn't drink the milk, couldn't figure out why and then would vomit.  The CM I had also kept going bad.  The frig was still cool and ice in the freezer.  But we discovered that at time the temp in the frig was dipping enough to allow the milk to sour.  Nothing else was going bad, just the milk.  I realized that I had to buy milk sooner and sooner even though it was no where near the expiration date.

I just saw this response. Thanks. I will watch out for it. Our fridge has a digital temp reader on the outside and every time I have checked it it has been 34 for fridge and -6 for freezer. I should check more often to see if it varies. Although I think that's just what it is set to be at....don't know that it reads the ACTUAL temp of the fridge. Hmmm...
