Question re: Daily Updates

Do you get daily updates at pickup from either the director or teachers regarding your child? The director is in the lobby to meet with all parents who come in every day. For the first week it was nice, and now its just annoying.

They tell me good and some struggling times for DS. Its not off the scale behavior though, its normal runofthemill 4yo stuff. Heck, I gave them an intro letter to help them understand DS more, and what "tactics" we found help us...they aren't telling us anything we don't know already, nor have we not informed them of ahead of time.

IDK if I'm hormonal and just easily irritated some days, like I just want a place for DS to learn, while I could focus on my needs too. OR if its because I'm confident in DS and also trusting of the school I chose, but can't I just to say...

"Thank you. Honestly, we trust your judgement, so unless its really important ie. Injury, etc. Its not necessary for me to know every hiccup, ya know? I trust you will handle it properly, and tell me at the parent/teacher conferences updates on his educational area, if need be."

Now if, of course I have any questions or concerns I will ask, but I also feel unless I ask specifically about something, its not necessary to know.

Re: Question re: Daily Updates

  • We've been shopping daycares lately, and many view daily updates as a selling point. I think there are a lot of helicopter parents out there who want to know what Junior ate and what he learned that day.

  • Our dc does daily updates but they're on paper, not verbal unless it was something really out of the ordinary.

That would be a bit annoying if it's just normal stuff. I have places to be!

  • I just get a slip every day. Says his mood, what he ate, when he was changed, and info on activities and crafts. I appreciate that. But a convo everyday?? Nope, wouldn't go for that. I wanna just grab DS and go home.

  • Can you ask them if it's possible to do this by email or keep an online log? That way you can access once a week or however often you like and don't have to hear daily that your kid likes bananas but no apples.

I run a day care and we do not do this.. If a child has an especially rough day we write it on their daily sheet we do daily sheets until they move to the school age class. If something really serious happens such as their child trying to stab another child in the eye with a pencil.. Yes that did happen.. we might talk to them in person.. Or if they have an incident report their child getting hurt we talk to them and have them sign the report.

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • As a former daycare teacher--I did the toddler room, I HATED the daily sheet we had to fill out. It was the bane of my existence---especially since the school was so picky about it. It was copied in the AM and given to us--with the 8 daily activities/focuses. (what book was read, art activity, center time, etc.) We also had to write down when they went to the bathroom (which I completely got). We also had to write down what the parents packed for lunch and how much they ate it. (That was during lunch time when there were 2 teachers for 20 toddlers---and making sure we wrote down what they ate before they threw their food out; and cleaning up spills, keeping kids that had food allergies separate, etc)

Under the daily activities we had to check if they participated or not. If they didn't participate we had to write when they did instead. (Instead of finger painting, they played with the water table, etc). We also had to write 3 sentences about their day.

All of this was going on while I was supposed to teach and run a 2.5 year old class with an aide. But the teacher was suppose to fill out the majority of the sheets and they were checked right after nap by the director. I just didn't have enough hands to fill out those sheets and make sure they didn't dump all the toys out. Or bite. Etc.

  • The daycare we had used had daily sheets and sometimes the teachers would talk to us at pick-up but it was not an everyday thing and typically more just chit chat while we gathered DD's stuff.  In PreK, the teachers had a white board outside the classroom that had the main things that they did that day but you only really got a rundown if your child had an issue that day or they needed to remind you of something out of the norm (like upcoming field trip for example)
