GD diet - breakfast ideas

Can anyone recommend some breakfast ideas to keep my number low?  I've tried several things and it's just not working.  I thought today would be good.  I had a whole wheat english muffin, one egg, one slice of cheese, and a morning star veggie sausage patty on it.  I then went for a 15 minute walk right after and my number was still 136 at my hour test time (need to be under 120).  Can anyone offer any suggestions?  Also, I HATE eggs, so I can't really eat them unless I disguise the flavor with a lot of other stuff.

  • Oh that's a good idea.  I never thought about a shake.  Are they all safe while pregnant?  My fasting numbers have been good, although they are close to my 90 point limit.

  • For some reason my number in the morning gets high whenever I eat anything like whole wheat toast or English muffin.   What works for me is some greek yogurt (regular yogurt makes my number high) and a piece of egg casserole.  I hate eggs also, but it works.   The casserole is like veggies (spinach and carmelized onions) a meat (this week kielbasa last week turkey bacon), cheese.  I put all of this is a oiled casserole dish, then pour over a beaten mixture of eggs and cottage cheese.  Bake for like an hour.  It's enough that it lasts for like a week (so you don't have to cook every morning).  The meat and veggie tends to drown out the egg flavor.

What about using a low cal wrap instead of the muffin? Maybe that is just to many carbs? Scramble the egg, sprinkle some cheese, and cut up the sausage then wrap it up? You could even use a small amt of salsa?

It could also be the sausage?

my whole wheat English muffins have 28 carbs and I am only allowed 15 for breakfast. So I can only eat half an english muffin with PB. Then I have an egg or cottage cheese and that keeps my numbers down

  • I'm boring and hate to cook so I go with special K breakfast sandwiches and always get good results but I found I can eat more in the morning and be fine so I also have a glass of chocolate milk.  in your case I'd skip the milk.

  • I noticed if I eat cheese with anything other then my 15g carb snack that my numbers are high, like if I put cheese on an egg sandwich or a turkey sandwich it's a no no.. So maybe try 1/2 cup all bran cereal with no added sugar, 1 cup of milk and maybe some cottage cheese that is high in protein I find cottage cheese I can do with a lot of other things just not the cheese that you have to cut a slice of, of cheese slices if you don't like cottage cheese try a tablespoon of peanuts, I've been using peanuts as my go to protein and it seems to be alright!
  • I had the same issue and figured out I can't have any type of toast in the morning. I have 3 egg whites with cheese and two of the morning sausage patties and it has kept my numbers below 110 for breakfast for the last two weeks. Not super appetizing but tolerable.
  • I usually have a waffle with peanut butter my numbers stay within normal and it's filling and tasty. Plus you can eat either the whole wheat or regular.
  • Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I found a frittata recipe that had veggies and sausage. I'm going to try that to see how it works. I think I really need to add protein and cut back the carbs. I was told to have 3045g with breakfast but I don't think my body can handle that.

  • I've been doing low carb whole wheat tortillas with cheese, taco sauce, and egg whites (veggies too if I'm feeling inventive). Burritos have been my morning go to!

I scramble up 2 eggs, add some cheese and use 1/4 cup picante sauce and put that into 2 corn tortillas. I have great numbers with this.

I have not done corn tortillas, but now I wanna try!

  • Hello! This is actually my first time writing here. I've had consistently good results with rye bread (I can even get away with 2 slices). I think it's even better than whole wheat for diabetics. I put peanut butter on top or eat eggs and some feta cheese with it. Tomatoes and cucumbers if you want to add veggies for a more filling breakfast.

I've found this info on the net:

A 1986 study in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" compared the glycemic responses of various grains. Whole-grain rye bread had only 89 percent of the glycemic response of white bread. Whole grain pumpernickel had only 78 percent the response of white bread. Both rye and pumpernickel scored better than even whole-grain wheat bread, which had 96 percent the glycemic response of white bread. The lower glycemic load presented by rye and pumpernickel breads suggests that eating it in the place of white or wheat bread can support a better glucose balance in people with diabetes.

Never tried pumpernickel bread, though. Don't even know what it tastes like. Rye tastes good to me, esp. when toasted.

Thanks for the info!  I love pumpernickel bread.  I think I'll have to try that.

I had a protein shake today and my number was only 100!!  I was so excited to see that.

  • I've had sugar success with 1-2 frozen waffles w/peanut butter ( depending on how many carbs are in each one, depends on the brand) has been good for me, as well as 2 egg whites and oatmeal.  I've found that dairy and fruits send my morning sugars up.

Ditto on the comments about what you had to eat the night before. For example, I'm allotted 3-4 carbs for dinner, and 1-2 for snack before bed.  If I max out my carbs for dinner and snack with starches, or if I have yogurt or fruit for my snack before bed it sends my fasting sugars up.  I've started having a frozen fruit bar or a frozen yogurt bar as my late night snack - I got the idea from some other GD ladies and for whatever weird reason it works to keep your fasting #'s down in the morning!

And as always, if you have more than a couple high # days call your physician or nutritionist to get more solid advice, as none of us are in that category and cannot really give medical advice (at least I think so lol).
