Favorite Book Recently?

Just for fun... What are some good reads you've picked up lately? I am about to start a new Steven King novel 11.22.63. Just finished the 8th book in the Dead Witch Walking series, which is a fun read if you like the paranormal stuff and a kick ass female heroine.

Re: Favorite Book Recently?

  • I just finished Silver Linings Playbook and loved it. I'm also reading The First Wives Club, now. I loved that movie but only just learned it's a book so I bought a used copy on Amazon. I might like the book even MORE than the movie.

@MarBee1214 That sounds like EXACTLY the kind of book I'd pick up so thanks for the heads up!

I read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn (author of Gone Girl) and I really liked it. I've heard her other book, Dark Places, is even better.

I'm reading The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood right now. She wrote The Handmaid's Tale which I loved right up until the last page. Blind Assassin is pretty strange so far, which is par for the course for her, but I'm very intrigued with it.

I also REALLY loved Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. Really unique writing style where he takes a lot of risks and pushes the norm. but for full disclosure, my mom didn't like it when I recommended it to her. She couldn't get over the writing and said it was distracting. But she's also a teacher so I think anything other than perfect grammar irks her, whether intentional or not.

I mostly hate to read but I did pick up "Babyproofing your Marriage" thinking it would actually be helpful to know what to expect your relationship to be like/change when baby comes...but it ended up being a bunch of women authors complaining about their husbands... I got through half of it and put it down because I was annoyed
DH and I actually read this book when I was on maternity leave with DS, right before I went back to work. We found it incredibly helpful, though. (The difference is probably that because we read it after we brought our first baby home, we were already immersed in a lot of the arguments the couples in the book had. To read other couples having the same complaints we did, it helped us understand each other better.)

  • I started re-reading J. D. Robb's 'In Death' series. Futuristic crime novel series with a dash of sex lol Nothing like her romance novels under her real name, Nora Roberts.

  • If you haven't read Karen Marie Monings Fever series (Darkfever, Bloodfever, etc), I HIGHLY recommend it - its by far my favorite and of the 4 people I've rec'd it to, they've all really enjoyed it too.  And I'm about to re-read it soon.

I have 11.22.63 on my nightstand, I just haven't started it yet!  I read Hourglass (thanks @sugarland726) over the weekend and am halfway through Delirium - both of which are YA and pretty good.

  • @wedbliss5, did you read Timepiece then? The second novel after Hourglass. And then the final book, Infinityglass is being released August 6th.

  • @sugarland726 neither my library or the online libray I use have it... so I need to request the get it or go buy it.  And being the instant gratification person I am, I found something else to start.  Ha!  I want to finish out the series though for sure!  I went through most of the other items recommended and my online library either didn't have them, or had a waitlist for them.  I was all excited about being able to get books online, and sadly they don't have nearly as much available as I would hope.  Oh well.

  • I don't know what state you are in or if yours even has this option, but in New York, you can have access to the NYC public library system just by being a resident of the state. I just had to fax in my license and then I can get any e-book they have, which is huge. My local county didn't even have The Hunger Games on e-book. So maybe look at a major city in your state for a bigger option?

  • Ok thanks, I'll check into that!  I'm actually in Texas, which we would all know if my avatar would update... grumble grumble...

  • I'm reading the Kite Runner - just a little ways into it, but good so far!
I'm also prepping for Middle School Reading Classes - so if your looking for some good Young Adult - The Outsiders was great and I'm reading the Lighting Thief!

Actually all of Karen Moning's books are great.  Most of the characters from her earlier books show up in the fever series.  I love her books!
