Breast Reduction & Breast Feeding

Hi ladies!  So at my first OB appointment my Dr did my exam and noticed I have had a breast reduction.  She told me at that time to be aware that I may not be able to breast feed very successfully.  The surgeon who performed my operation had said it should not affect my ability to breast feed but it sounds like that may not be the case.  Have any of you moms out there had a reduction and been able to breast feed?  Thanks!!!

Re: Breast Reduction & Breast Feeding

  • Breast reductions remove tissue, which can include mammory glands and other things important to milk production and nursing.

I'm fairly annoyed at your surgeon on your behalf. I assume your OB could feel the missing tissue?

  • Oh and there are moms who do it, but you may need to supplement.

  • Your OB should not have told you that.  If your surgeon said you should be able to BF, then that is probably true.  I had a breast reduction and my dr. actually cut some ducts (with my consent at 18 years old...regret this one for sure).  Anyways, I was unable to breastfeed, but my friends that had breast reductions were all able to do it.  I am sure you will be just fine.
  • I have had a breast reduction and was able to successfully breastfeed my son for 6 weeks! I have learned a lot since my first and will be trying even harder his time around! What I found helpful was to use a nipple shield! Pm me if you have more questions!!!
Good luck when the time comes!
  • I had a breast reduction in 2001 and am STILL successfully breastfeeding my son. We exclusively breastfed until 6 months and didn't introduce other liquids until 11-12 months. I have a ton of tips on how to maximize your changes for a successful breastfeeding experience if you'd like to PM me (if I can find where the PMs are in this new format...). Our time in the hospital was incredibly stressful as I was basically forced into giving my son formula for a few days. He never needed formula again.

A good first resource is BFAR (Breast Feeding After Reduction)...there's a great book you can get on Amazon, too. https://www.amazon.com/Defining-your-Own-Success-Breastfeeding/dp/0912500867/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374656372&sr=8-1&keywords=bfar
