I am by no means an expert in refinishing in furniture as I have only done a couple of pieces.
The bunk beds that I repainted for Emma's on day big girl room were DHs when he was a boy. They are solid oak wood with an old varnish. I started by sanding them down and then I painted them with an antique white color. After I was done painting, I distressed the paint by sanding it down in places and dinging the furniture up a bit.
I would recommend always sanding down the furniture as it makes it easier for the paint or varnish.
I watched a bunch of you tube videos on how to do this and just kinda winged it. I would not feel confident trying to restore some of the older antiques that I have in my home...I still need more practice. All the furniture that I refurbished, I ended up painting. Staining wood would be a bit trickier I think.
Here was one of the websites I used when redoing the bunk beds and dressers.

No problem!
I think you can have fun with paint colors. E's dresser is coral and cream. When I finish this weekend, I will take a pic.
The sanding isn't too bad. You do not have to go crazy. Just enough so the paint adheres better.
