Cloth Diapering

faint yellow stains?

For our GMD prefolds we usually do the following:

-Rinse the poopy prefold in hot, running water with our detachable showerhead.

-Every other day I wash the diapers with the following procedure - 1 hot wash on "heavy" with an extra rinse and no soap followed by 1 cold wash on "heavy" with soap and an extra rinse.  I'm using Tide free liquid.

Yet, faint yellow stains remain on a few of the diapers - is this normal?  Can we still use them if they do have faint yellow stains (husband claims this means I'm not getting them clean enough)?  What do you do to prevent this from happening - I'm assuming it would be a bad idea to use stain remover...

Thanks!

Re: faint yellow stains?

  • Oh yeah, the yellow color is definitely from poop, my son is not dehydrated!!

  • We sometimes get yellowish poop stains but generally they disappear in the next wash. You could sun out the stains if they are bothering you.
Your wash routine seems a little odd to me. Why is your prewash cycle so long? I'm just not sure you're getting much bang for your buck there with all those rinses in a prewash. Also I have read that hot water prewash can set in stains so you might try cold instead.

  • Faint yellow stains are normal. As PPs mentioned, the sun will bleach them out.

Your wash routine sounds a little off, though. I would switch the temps - cold wash w/o detergent (no extra rinse needed, especially since you're already spraying your diapers beforehand) and then hot wash with detergent. That may reduce the staining you get as well.

I thought most people suggested not using liquid detergent on CDs?  I use tide original powder.  And I agree with PP's about making the first a cold rinse, then a hot wash with detergent and an extra rinse.
