LO Hates the bottle! Help!

Ok so I have tried about 4 nipples so far and no luck. I am at the stage where grandma can watch her without me blowing a gasket. She doesnt take a pacifier as well. Im ok with her not taking that because right now she's fine.Any suggestions on nipples?

Re: LO Hates the bottle! Help!

  • DS hates most of them. I went crazy trying to find something, and got about 10 different nipples/bottles. Only to find that he didn't take any of those any better than the MAM nipples. What happens is that he will take something, and the next day he'll have none of it. Boob only.

That being said, the ones he might tolerate sometimes are the MAM, Lansinoh Momma, and the Avent sippy for 4+ months. They all fit on our Born Free bottles too.

The NUK pissed him off entirely.

Today was different though.... he had his shots this morning. He was fine for a little while, and a couple hours later he was doing nothing but crying. He would not nurse at all. After we gave him a bit of Tylenol, he would still not nurse, but actually took about 3.5oz from the Avent sippy.

I can't figure this boy out with the whole bottle situation.

  • I've tried 6 or 7 different bottles and a variety of different levels of nipples and after no luck with any of them I've just given up and she is EBF.  I figure I've made it 4 months so what's a few more months.  I wish I had better advice but nothing worked for us.

We're in the same boat.  DD#1 was the exact same way and finally ended up taking a sippy cup (with a straw) when she was about 8 months old.  I'm just hanging on until 6 months when we can start feeding her food.  It was a huge relief when I knew DH could at least get something in her if I was gone for a few hours. My husband actually got LO to drink a little from an open cup the other day, so maybe try that.  Hang in there, you're not alone!!

  • My son hated it too, but we just kept giving him one every day, and after a week of him screaming at the bottle, he's finally ok with it. We use Dr. Browns. We still give him one a day, even if we don't have plans to go anywhere, just so the bottle is still in his world.

  • Are you just now introducing a bottle? One of my classes said to introduce it once BF is established or they will reject it later. I don't want to be critical, but I am surprised they didn't tell you this during one of the classes.
  • what have you tried?  The Tommee Tippee are supposed to be very boob-like, and my DD takes them well - but she has never been picky with bottles so it may just be luck that she likes them.

  • Been trying for two months! At first after bf was established. But my Dr said better and less time consuming if I just bf'd alone. Been trying off and on. I've never tried to personally do it since people said I would confuse her. It's so frustrating. Maybe is should try it when she is extremely hungry.

I'm not sure I buy into this. I've heard it a million times too. But we introduced a bottle fairly early on, after he was doing great on the breast. He initially took the bottle, and later refused it. It has been off and on ever since.

That's just my experience though. My MIL also says DS has a temper. And she has 9 other grand kids.

  • We had this too. We tried the ComoTomo and it worked. It was still a struggle, tho. Each day we would try one feeding with the bottle and it got easier and easier. He would get so tired from being upset with the bottle he would go to sleep. He never went longer than 5 hours before finally caving in. It is your willpower against his!

One note: the daycare definitely had an easier time than I did with feeding him.

  • My DD refused bottles when we started. We went through 4 or 5 until she settled on the playtex dropins with a latex slow flow nipple. Apparently is was close enough to the real deal. It took about 3 to 4 weeks of constant trying though.

We are using the same for DS since we have all the gear, he hasn't had any issues.

Did you find that in store or online? The only latex ones I've seen have been fast flow...

Same here. We actually bought one of each type bottle and various nipples and tried them all multiple times. DD refused the bottle starting 8 weeks old. She was taking both the bottle and the breast fine from day one like a champion...but once she refused it we were never able to get her take a bottle again. She's now almost 5 months old and EBF. I'll probably get flamed for this but I feel trapped some days as DH can never help feed her so I am with her 24/7 everyday of the week. Some days she eats hourly (snacks), some days she can go for 3 hours. It's all over the place..I love being a mom but wish I could take a few hours once a week (heck, once a month even!) to myself...

  • We had the same thing, wanted nothing to do with a bottle, which isn't an option as our LO goes to daycare. We tried mutiple bottles and ended up with the breastflow bottle. We should have introduced it sooner rather than waiting a week before I went back to work. We ended up using the bait and switch tactic (lol). We started breastfeeding and then stopped and offered the bottle. Each time we decreased the breastfeeding time until he took the bottle from the get go. Good Luck!

You are not alone!!!! I love that i can breastfeed lo, BUT at times i resent the chain of it. I dont have enough milk to pump much extra so i am attached to my babe too.I know i will have freedom again soon enough...it's a gift and a sacrifice. IT WILL CHANGE :)

The latex nipples on drop-in nursers are what finally worked for us too.  I found the bottles and nipple at BRU.

  • Tried Tommie's she just chews the nipples and pushes it out with her tongue.
  • That's how I feel trapped. She took it early on for a week and them EBF 'd. Now it like ok time for bottle want to take trips and not be trapped.
  • I am glad I'm not alone in this. DD is 5 months as of today, and only drank from a bottle once when she was 3 weeks old, and never again despite 100's of tries and several different bottles. Yesterday something finally worked, and it wasn't a bottle, its called a Doidy Cup, you can get it from Amazon. It took 3 days of trying it before she figured it out, but last night she easily drank the 2 oz breastmilk I put in there (with her dad holding the cup and me in a different room). I recommend trying to skip the bottle if you have stressed out about it as much as I have, which has been a lot because I go back to work in 12 days.
