Knoxville birthing center

Hey I am new to Knoxville and really want to do the whole natural birth thing and am trying to find a birthing center...any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Knoxville birthing center

  • Your only option is going to be Lisa Ross.

Several people recommended them to me and continually gushed about how wonderful the experience was so I signed up.

I cannot say that I was so lucky. I was diagnosed with an IUFD (intrauterine fetal demise) at 34 weeks on Sept 3, 2012...5 days after my last midwife visit. I did not end up getting to deliver there and had to go to UT to confirm fetal death and be induced.

They never checked my urine after the first visit. The only additional bloodwork done was for the GD test. They did one ultrasound at 20 weeks which was fine and all...but something obviously went wrong in the following 14 weeks. They did not test my thyroid (which my current OB did and found that I'm marginally hypo which can be dangerous for baby). He did have a nuchal cord x 2 at delivery. My current OB does not believe that is what caused him to pass away (as she has delivered lots and lots of babies with cords around their neck blah blah blah; i know it happens sometimes though.) but we'll never know for sure what happened.

I don't blame them but they missed something...or I missed something. Either way, we lost our much loved and much wanted Benjamin.

We're now expecting again, thankfully...but I won't ever get over that.

  • Have you considered doing a home birth? That is probably the best way to get a natural birth in this area, not to mention that women who birth at home have lower rates of stress during birth (you are in a familiar, comfortable environment that you can change to suit your wants and needs during labor).

There are some really great home birth midwives in the Knoxville area. I know there is a state-wide website that listed a bunch of the CPMs in TN. Check it out.

And feel free to message me with any questions. I have had two water births with use of Hypnobabies. One with Carolyn Drake in Chattanooga and one with Talitha Mills in Antioch. I wouldn't give birth any other way!

I want a natural birth too! But I'm thinking about a natural water birth. And only place that does them are Tennova right off Woodland Ave. before you get to UT going south! They are amazing midwives there.
  • Hi there! I'm going with St. Marys Birth and Midwifery Center, off of Broadway in Knoxville?

Had a really great experience so far - I am having just midwife led care at the moment, but did meet with the OB (Dr. Brabson) and felt very reassured by his attention to detail and kind manner, should my need for a Dr. arise. The birthing center is attached to the hospital there, so although separate, if intervention is needed it's literally down the hall.

They have been great about being pretty hands off with me so far, I have been able to request infrequent scans, no defect testing etc. with plenty of support. I know they do VBAC's there and pride themselves on serving women and support them in natural birth. They do offer water births but I know that may be changing soon due to the powers that be above them. Humph.

I have been to Lisa Ross too and was not impressed. My heart goes out to bekabug for your loss, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I found they made a few scheduling mistakes etc. with me that were a little unnerving and didn't inspire much confidence at the time, but perhaps that was just me.

     Good luck on your search!
