Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Finger foods: teeth required?

My daughter is 6 1/2 months old and soon we'd like to start offering her some finger foods.  We have organic puff snacks and the like.  Does she need to sprout a tooth or two before we start offering these things?  Right now all the solid foods she is eating are pureed foods that I make and bananas through a mesh feeder.

Re: Finger foods: teeth required?

  • My daughter is 8 months old and she can eat the puffs just fine without teeth and the yogurt melts are easy to eat with out teeth as well. I also offer her some toddler food, the soft apple pieces and carrot pieces too. So for me the answer I would give is no, teeth aren't need, but that is how I feel.

    Good Luck :)

  • No, she doesn't need teeth.  Their gums are very strong and able to mash up most foods.

  • Even when teeth comes out, they are the front teeth so they aren't for chewing (molars are for chewing and they don't cut until much later).  As long as the foods are soft, the babies can gum them.

  • We tried finger foods yesterday, some cut up banana.  She didn't seem interested in it at all!  Just moved the pieces around a bit on her tray but didn't pick any up or put them in her mouth.  And she still prefers that we hold a bottle for her so she has no interest in learning to use a sippy cup either.  Maybe we'll try again in a month or so.  Since she's going to be the only one I don't mind.  I wish she could stay little forever! :)
