Cloth Diapering

I want to cd, but where to start?

I want to CD, but where to start?

I really have no clue! I live in a town where the only cloth diapers know to exist are the squares of cotton by gerber, and you can only find them at target and walmart. If I want to be able to actually look at diapers in person, I would probably have to drive at least 4 or 5 hours away. What I think I want to do is get some tri-fold for when my little one comes home. My thought is they won't bother her belly button and regardless of size I should be able to get them to fit. Then later move to a AIO or Pocket? Thing is I think I know what these things are but am not positive at all.

Basically, any advice would be great, one specific question is about the tri-fold, those are kind of like what my mom used on me right, we just don't use safety pins anymore?

  • Start with youtube and lots of reading on cloth diapering websites. If you don't have a cloth diapering store nearby youtube is usually the best way to get a better look at diapers.

I can't help you with the folds since we did aios and pockets to start out.

So aios and pockets will be okay even with the little tender umbilical cord?
  • Watch the You Tube series called Cloth Diapering 101!  It will help.

I used prefolds for the newborn stage and ended up loving them much more than pockets, AIOs or any other fancy diaper I've tried.

This is important for you to know -- for a newborn, you do NOT want to plan on trifolding prefolds.  Newborns have very runny poo that will be everywhere.  You definitely want to use the jelly roll fold and a Snappi.  It will contain everything really well with no leaks.

When your baby starts eating solids, then their poop becomes formed.  Then you can trifold.

I used Imagine Smart Fit size small prefolds from www.nickisdiapers.com from birth to about 3mo.  I didn't need newborn sized but my baby was 8lbs 10oz.

Some of our aios and pockets had a snap down so they didn't cover the cord. Simplex nb and kissaluvs nb. However, in our case the way they cut his cord it was really flat so it didn't catch on anything anyway.

  • I was in this same boat and wound up doing Jillian's Drawers' Cloth Diaper Trial. It was great, and since we did the newborn trial it saved us from having to purchase newborn diapers. I did a video review of my experience doing this trial program, which I would highly recommend!
