Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Silent Reflux

Hi Ladies-

Just thought I'd share my story in case others were having the same issues.  My DD has always been a relatively "fussy" baby.  The past 5 days have been the worst (she's 12 weeks).  She has been eating only half of what her daily intake should be.  She should have been eating around 30 oz. of formula/day but she was only taking 15-20 oz.  It would take her 45 minutes to eat 2-3 oz.  She also wasn't sleeping well and was only content if she was held upright with pressure on her belly.  I took her to the doctor yesterday and she diagnosed her with silent reflux (she wasn't spitting up).  She said the sudden drop in daily consumption with the length of time to eat were concerns.  She prescribed Zantac twice a day.  I gave her the first dose of medicine and for the first time in her 3 months of life she ate 6 oz. in one sitting.  She has never had more than 3 oz.  The doctor said she was likely hungry all the time but it hurt to eat because of the reflux.  She also slept for 5 hours last night, woke up for 30 minutes to chug 3 oz. and then went back to sleep for another 5 hours.  It was pure heaven.  And now my little bug is happy as a clam.

The first pediatrician we saw at 4 weeks said she was just a "fussy" baby and that nothing was wrong.  The doctor we saw yesterday said this was probably the issue all along.

So happy to have a pleasant baby, at least for now. :)

Re: Silent Reflux

  • Poor thing. It's terrible to see our LOs suffer! My LO had the same thing, except she was still eating enough and gaining weight. Maybe hers was not as bad as your LO, but she would have times when she was clearly in pain, crying hysterically at least once a day. The Zantac alone didn't help her so now she's on both Zantac and Prevacid, plus we had to try a few formulas before finding one that has helped her. She still has episodes every now and then, but she's such a happier baby now. I hope you find long lasting relief with the Zantac!

  • We had a very similar experience with DD1 and I was told it was gas. I knew it was something else so at 4m I told the Pedi I wasn't leaving without a plan and help. Her first dose of Zantac she was a different baby. If she starts showing symptoms again see if her dosing needs adjusted since it is based off weight.
