When did you start (or when do you plan on) letting LO watch tv or dvds? I was thinking about starting educational dvds (ex. Baby Einstein or LeapFrog) when she turns one, but I'm wondering if that's too soon. It says on the products that it's age appropriate (12 months and up).
Plus, I was going to use that as a gift idea for her birthday.
Re: TV/DVDs
I let W watch TV now, but I don't count it as any kind of learning or educational experience. It's mostly just a distraction for when I need him to sit quietly for 10-15 minutes or to wind down at the end of the day when we're both exhausted. I don't bother to put on kid's shows though, he just watches whatever I'm watching if it's not too inappropriate.
My almost 1 year old loves the baby Einstein and Leapfrog Scout movies (the ones with the dogs not the frogs). He dances to the music and even says his vowels with them. And we put on baby Einstein after bath before bed for some quite time. Sometimes he sits down and watches but mostly it's background noise while we brush our teeth pick up our toys etc. he doesn't watch them in his room or by himself. We watch and interact with them.
So I recommend them
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no TV until age 2. I'm a speech-language pathologist, and I can tell you research is completely in agreement with that recommendation - kids who start TV sooner are at higher risk for delays in all areas, but especially in language development. Of course, letting your child watch TV isn't a guarantee they will have delays, either. We don't let our LO watch TV yet, but I do let her use some apps on the Kindle for about 5 minutes a day because she is OBSESSED with getting her hands on the Kindle or our iPhones. It's hard to keep them away from it completely.
We don't turn on the tv in front of E. He sees it on at restaurants or if we're at someone else's house and they have it on, but we're not going to watch tv with him or put on shows for him until after he is 2.
(exception: he stared at that little Jet Blue airplane tv for a chunk of a flight watching a football game. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
)
Right...it's not so much the tv itself as much as the time lost when you could be having valuable interactions.
Same here. And even then, DS still doesn't watch too much.
