1st Trimester

Holy constipation!

I need suggestions to deal with constipation and hemmoroids. I am only 7 weeks with my second child, and this is the most unkind part of pregnancy for me. I am eating lots of fiber rich foods but it's still really bad! Any tips or ways to get things moving?!

Re: Holy constipation!

  • Milk of Magnesia and Miralax. Doctor said both are fine. I was crying in pain from this the other night and took a full dose of MoM for two days before anything happened, but that's because i'm on zofran which stops you up. Hope you get relief soon!

  • I would talk to your OB before you take anything, but Colace is very safe.

Make sure you're drinking enough water to account for the excess fiber.  Fiber without liquid to push it is just going to back you up more.  Pre-pregnancy, I strive for 30+ gm of fiber per day, so if you sign up for a calorie counter or just mark down your fiber intake and water intake, you'll know where you are at.

I also bought some Gnu bars prior to pregnancy and they are awesome.  12 gm of fiber each!

  • My doctor allows Colace. It's helpful.

Try adding prunes to your diet. Prunes are high in sorbitol, which 'floods' your colon with water to soften up your stool and allow a bowel movement. If you're constipated, all the water has been sucked out of your stool making it really hard to push out. Anyway, hope this helps.

  • I take the metamucil pills that now have calcium in them too. Helps plus you get the extra mg's of cal

  • My doctor gave me a bowel recipe:

1 cup of wheat bran (I got mine at whole foods. normal grocery stores do not sell it)

    1 cup of apple sauce

1/2 cup of 100% prune juice

    -Mix and keep refrigerated/covered.

-It will be a pasty consistency. Take 2 tablespoons before bed with a glass of water. I take 2 tablespoons in the AM as well, bc I've always had constipation issues even before pregnancy. It helps!!!
