January 2014 Moms

Grrr, furious w/ my OB.

So I called last Thursday because I was having what felt like cervical contractions.  Left a message and asked them to please return my phone call just to let me know whether this was normal or I should be seen. No return phone call.

Called again Friday.  Guess what?  No return phone call.

Tried calling today.  Oh guess what?  Now their voice mail box is full!  So I called 5 different times and couldn't get a hold of anyone!  I'm so mad I'm thinking of switching OBs.

I was still have those weird cervical contraction feelings, but now cue left flank pain and a fever (which I took Tylenol to bring down).  I ended up hitting up the ER, because I was very concerned.  Got to hear the baby's heart beat.  And I ended up having a moderate amount of blood in my urine and diagnosed with a kidney infection.  Boo.  Now on keflex.

I'm so angry at my OBs office.  Could have saved me the ER co-pay if they had just returned my phone call.  I'm asking around friends to hear their experiences with other OBs in the area.  I'm just really disheartened about this because I actually really like my OBs.

Re: Grrr, furious w/ my OB.

  • Wow I would be livid.  And honestly I think I would probably switch OBs.  That is just unacceptable.  I'm glad you were able to get an answer and I hope you feel better soon.

  • Wow that is awful that they didn't call you back for several DAYS! I'd be so mad too. My office always has one OB one call 24/7 and you get patched through to them for anything relatively important. After my wreck last Thursday night the OB called me back less than one minute after I called in. I can't believe a nurse didn't even call you back.

Sorry to hear about the kidney infection also. I hope you feel better asap!

I would switch. That is unacceptable.

  • That would be unacceptable for an OB's office to not return a call or be available if I had a question. I would definitely look into switching. I really sorry that happened to you. Yay for heartbeat and healthy baby!

  • This happened to me after my DC when I called about some bleeding that was worrying me. If they hadn't opened a nurse's line since then and I didn't trust my OB so much, I would have been gone.

  • Thanks for validating my frustrating feelings toward my OB.  I think I will switch when I found someone worthy! lol.

  • Yeah...that's unacceptable. I can't believe you didn't get a call back after days; I would definitely be frustrated if I was in your shoes. I'm glad you got some answers in the ER, but it definitely shouldn't have come down to that.

  • Definitely sounds like it's time for a change - that is absolutely ridiculous.  Make sure to do it earlier rather than later - around here, lots of OBs won't accept new patients once they hit 20 weeks.

  • Yeah, I'd be pissed. Especially because of the fact that you (a) had to pay an ER co-pay and (b) had something seriously wrong with you.
  • That is not acceptable. I'd be switching for sure.
  • I would be looking for a new OB if this was me.

  • I would be furious as well.  Kidney infections can be serious while pregnant.  I would definitely start looking for another dr. and I would address your concerns at your next appointment.
  • Wow that's just ridiculous. I'm sorry. But I'm glad you got the infection diagnosed.

    Definitely find someone new.

And sorry about the kidney infection.

Definitely not OK.  Pregnant women with possible urgent concerns should have phone calls returned promptly, the same day if at all possible.  If your doctor is unavailable, there should be a backup doctor.

Maybe just maybe, their phone system broke down.  That's the only reasonable explanation I can come up with.

That kind of wait is ridiculous (especially considering that, for all they know, you're still waiting). I'm sorry you're dealing with the infection and an OB's office that appears to be neglecting their patients. I'd probably switch too.

  • Wow! Change OBs! Where is Easter Washington are you? Is there a larger city near by you could do to?

  • Yup, I'd be pissed too and looking at switching OBs ASAP. I'm sorry you had such a crappy experience but I'm glad you're on the mend now.

I echo PPs. I would have been furious too and I think it is a good idea to bring it up to your doctor at your next appointment. In the meantime, I would be searching for a new OB.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

  • Yikes, your OB wasn't there fot you when needed him/her. I would have wanted to avoid the ER too! It's expensive. I'd be livid too and definitely switch. Don't worry, you'll like another OB just as much as you did the last one but will also know you are in better hands. Wow, what if this were further down the road and you were in labor?

  • I think it was horrible that your OB didn't call you back, but going to the ER may have been unavoidable. The office that my OB is out of has a doppler and an old ultrasound machine but that's it. A hospital has much newer and more advanced monitoring equipment so I would have been sent there first.

I would definately demand answers as to why you didn't get an answer sooner.

I'm in the Tri-Cities.  There are a sh!t ton of OBs here.  I was just with my group because I'm high risk and they have the peri.

This is something to really consider. Sometimes it's the staff that is failing and not the doctor himself. I wouldn't switch just yet, until you can meet with him in person and explain the sitaution. Depending on how he handles it, then I'd switch. I'm not saying to let it go and I would be super pissed in your shoes.

I would be so furious, there is no excuse for that. I'm glad that you went to the ER and baby is fine. I hope that your infection goes away soon.

  • Gotya! We used to drive to Tri Cities for everything when I was in Walla Walla so I imagine you have the best selection.
