So I'm starting to get my stash together for my baby coming in Sept. I'm a FTM and planning on CD from the start. I've started to get some Lil Joeys and Kissaluv newborn AIO.
I'm just wondering what the benefit is to getting some fitteds? I have to purchase a separate diaper cover, correct? That just seems like a lot more money, almost double. Can someone break this down for me?
Thanks in advance!
Re: Newborn fitteds a Waste?
GMD has a really inexpensive fitted, the nb workhorse...I think around six bucks each. That's pretty cheap. And yes, a separate cover is needed. But you need only about six NB covers...change when it gets poopy or smells of pee. Wipe clean during each diaper change
Fitteds will last muuuuuuuch longer absorbency-wise compared to any NB AIO you'll buy. Li'l joeys are super cute and fit well, but our baby outgrew the absorbency well before the diaper stopped fitting.
Fitteds are definitely worth it
No - fitteds are amazing for newborns. The best at containing runny nb poo. You only need 1 or 2 covers for every 6 fitteds in your stash, so it ends up being less expensive than AIOs. And IME, much more effective.
I actually found newborn AIOs to be a waste because my LO outgrew the absorbency of hers at 3 weeks old. She wore her nb fitteds until 8 weeks when she fit into one size pockets.
Kissaluv 0s are awesome. You can find them cheap on diaper swappers - I got mine barely used for 5 each.

Newborn fitteds are not a waste! As pp mention, the Green Mountain Diaper NB Workhorse fitted is around $6 and you only need a handful of covers, which you can get just as cheap if you look around. I love tiny covers from Assunta Online and they just restocked, those are about $6 a piece. So really going fitteds and covers might cost you less than doing NB AIOs. My stash is going to be mostly fitteds and covers. My ideal NB stash would be 24 GMD WH Fitteds, 6 covers, 12 prefolds, and 8 NB AIOs.
Fitteds hold in newborn poop better. The nice thing about the workshorse fitted is that you can get unbleached organic in a nice fitting diaper for very little money.
Thanks so much for the information! Anyone have a preference on some great covers for newborns? I'm interested in some that (if possible) have a umbilical snap down.
As a side note am I able to get anything (liner, doubler, etc) to add into the AIOs I've already purchase to increase absorbancy? Someone mentioned a flat?
Also, I got a free Flip... is this the same thing as a cover?
We had a couple kissaluvs 0 but didn't use them. There was nothing wrong with them but we just preferred our newborn simplex diapers.
I don't think you will be able to add anything to Lil Joeys or the Kissaluvs aio. They are very small diapers. Maybe a small size hemp insert.
Yes. The flip is a cover but it won't fit your newborn.
As PP said, there's probaby not much you'll be able to add to the NB AIOs. You could try a wash cloth.
A flip is an awesome cover, but it's a One-Size (OS) cover so it likely won't fit until around 10-12lbs.
Bummis Super Brite, Thirsties Duo Size One, Blueberry Mini Coveralls, and Rumparooz newborn covers all get really good reviews around here.
With DD1 I used sposies. DD2 got prefolds and covers. DD3 is in fitteds and covers at 7wks. I LOVE fitteds. I'm so bummed I didn't find them sooner. I thought they might be a waste too but I had found a great deal on diaperswappers.com for a set of 12 Primm&Proper Sherpa Fitteds.
I love Thirsties Duo size 1 covers. Bummis just didn't work for us.
